Obesity, Health & COVID-19 Risk
Added 16/01/21
Obesity is a condition that increases the risk of catching COVID-19. In fact, research shows that being obese makes a person one and half times more likely to catch the virus and over three and a half more times likely to experience severe disease or death because of it.
Why is that the case? One reason is that the virus has been found to enter the body through a receptor found in fat cells. So, the more fat cells you have, the higher your chance of the virus entering your body. In addition, studies have shown that being overweight can weaken a person’s immune system. Also, often those who are obese have higher blood sugar levels too, which leads to more severe symptoms once the virus actually enters the body.
As if that isn’t scary enough, obesity also makes breathing more laboured in those who catch the virus, affecting their sleep and further reducing the body’s ability to fight the infection.
There are also some other diseases related to obesity which can have an effect on how likely a person is to catch COVID-19. For example, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, inflammation, kidney disease and vitamin/mineral deficiencies.
So what steps can be taken to minimise this risk? Weight loss is the key, so for people that are overweight, diet may be the most important factor in reducing their risk of catching COVID-19. An improved diet leads to weight loss, which leads to a reduction in fat cells and an increase in the body’s ability to fight infection.
An additional way to minimise this risk is the intake of vitamins and minerals. There are a number of vitamins that research shows are crucial to immunity. These include vitamins A, D, C, E, B6, B12, folate, zinc, iron, copper, and selenium – with Vitamin D being highlighted in particular as a potential game-changer against COVID.
So in conclusion, we see that obesity and its related diseases can increase the risk of being infected with and experiencing severe symptoms of COVID-19, but the good news is there is a solution. The risk can be effectively reduced by weight loss and a nourishing diet that contains the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals, including nutritional MRPs.
