Paleo Diet and Metabolic Health: Does it Help?
Metabolic health refers to the effective functioning of body processes by having optimal serum glucose levels, cholesterol, insulin concentrations, lipid profiles, and blood pressure. The five metabolic health markers are: blood sugar, triglycerides levels, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and waist circumference. Metabolic health helps maintain a sustainable life, prevents the risk of metabolic diseases, and improves the quality of life.

Keto Diet: A Complete List of What to Eat and Avoid, Plus a 7-Day Sample Menu
If you’re looking to get a jump-start on your health and fitness goals, you may be thinking about trying a low-carb eating plan such as the ketogenic diet. Maybe you’ve heard the phrase before — it’s a huge diet buzzword — but aren’t sure what it means.
Here’s a primer: The popular ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. Meanwhile, you’ll aim for moderate protein in your meal plan. In other words, it’s a far cry from the fad low-fat diet approaches of yesteryear — and, really, from other diets in general.
The main way ketogenic diets differ from other popular low-carb diets is that keto diets aim to drive your body into a metabolic state called ketosis, in which the body starts burning stored fat as a source of energy, instead of carbohydrates, says Stacey Mattinson, RDN, who is based in Austin, Texas. Once you’ve adjusted your food intake to get there, your body can enter a state of ketosis in 1 to 3 days, she adds. Nutritional ketosis can also happen if you eat another restrictive diet — specifically, a very low-calorie diet. Typically, that type of diet consists of 600 to 800 total calories per day and is doctor supervised and medically recommended.

6 tips to keep an intermittent fasting diet on track
As interest keeps growing in intermittent fasting, so do the questions about how to get the most out of the weight-loss strategy.
The benefits are clear: the plans can be easy to follow; some don’t require any calorie counting; they can make people healthier and may even delay the symptoms of Alzheimer's.
Intermittent fasting also doesn’t lead to eating disorders or slow down a person’s metabolism, said Krista Varady, a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois, Chicago, who has been studying fasting for almost 15 years and offers tips about it on her Instagram page.
She’s the co-author of a 2022 review of studies that found intermittent fasting is generally safe and produces few gastrointestinal, neurological, hormonal or metabolic adverse effects.
Her previous research showed obese people who followed the 16:8 fasting regimen for three months modestly lost weight and lowered their blood pressure without feeling hungry or deprived.
Varady dabbles with intermittent fasting herself, typically for a few weeks after the holidays to lose a few pounds. The 16:8 plan is less intense than the other plans, but if she wants a more rapid weight loss, she’ll opt for alternate day fasting.
“The first five fast days are pretty tricky, but once your body gets adjusted to that kind of up-down pattern of eating, it actually gets really easy,” Varady told TODAY.

Years ago, when my brother began experimenting with intermittent fasting, I was intrigued but skeptical. It seemed too severe, too harsh, too tough, and honestly, kinda scary. But then I observed him, read extensively, and over time began experimenting with various approaches myself.
THE POPULARITY OF INTERMITTENT FASTING IS ON THE RISE
I'm not alone. A few days ago I met friends I hadn't seen in a couple of years for dinner. Bernie had lost forty plus pounds and was off is diabetes medicine. His wife, Christine, had dropped 30 pounds. They attribute their weight loss to the habits they have adopted since first learning about IF from Dr. Jason Fung.

Intermittent Fasting Guide
Intermittent fasting is quickly becoming one of the most popular eating strategies for those looking to lose fat. It’s a dieting tool centred around eating patterns rather than specific foods you should eat – but is it a fad? Or, an effective strategy to assist in long-term weight loss?
Rather than specifying what foods you should be consuming, Intermittent Fasting, or IF, specifies when you should be eating – it involves windows of eating and fasting each day. Put simply, in a 24h or 7 day period you eat for x amount of hours/days and fast for x amount of hours/days.
This type of eating pattern, or strategy, has its roots in World History; Ancient Man didn’t have the access to food that we enjoy today, so would go for long periods without eating in between successful hunts. Modern humans eat three meals per day for cultural and practical reasons, which have evolved as we have evolved, rather than for biological reasons. Fasting is, historically, a normal eating pattern for us human folk, so is, in essence, not a new concept.
How does intermittent fasting induce weight loss? By reducing the amount of time available for you to eat, theoretically increasing your chance of being in a calorie deficit...yep, you got it, this is simply a means to create that caloric deficit I talk about so much.

Meal Timing: Is Intermittent Fasting the Best Strategy?
First, what really is intermittent fasting?
That’s a complicated question, because there are several ways to approach it. The most common method is a 16/8 plan; fasting 16 out of every 24 hours, and eating during the other 8 hours. For most people working first shift or similar hours, this typically means a noon-8pm eating window.
Others choose to fast all day, save for one large meal. Some do alternate day fasting, which is a full 24 hours of fasting every other day. Others yet will incorporate a 24-hour fast one or two times a week.

Intermittent fasting is a dietary approach that involves interspacing planned periods of fasting with regular eating. It is an eating pattern that cycle between periods of eating and fasting. It focuses more on when to eat rather than what to eat.
Intermittent fasting works by prolonging the period when the body has burned through the calories consumed from the last meal and begins to burn fat. The body will use up its sugar stores and starts to burn fat after hours of fasting, this process is known as metabolic switching.
Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
Help Lose Weight and Visceral Fat
Intermittent fasting can support hormone function to facilitate weight loss. Lower insulin levels, higher Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels, and increased amounts of noradrenaline can assist in the breakdown of body fat and facilitate its use for energy. Because of this, fasting actually increases the body metabolic rate and eventually help to burn more calories. According to a 2014 review of the scientific literature, intermittent fasting can cause weight loss of 3–8% over 3–24 weeks.
Lowering risk for Type II Diabetes
Intermittent fasting has been shown to have major benefits for insulin resistance, leading to an impressive reduction in blood sugar levels. In human studies on intermittent fasting, fasting blood sugar has been reduced by 3–6% over the course of 8–12 weeks in people with prediabetes. Fasting insulin has been reduced by 20–31%.
Beneficial for Heart Health
Intermittent fasting improves heart health by controlling the risk factors that lead to heart diseases. The risk factors include blood sugar levels, blood pressures, cholesterol levels and inflammatory markers.
Improve Sleep
Research suggests that intermittent fasting may improve sleeping quality by reinforcing the circadian rhythms.

How to follow an intermittent fasting schedule with 6 different methods!
The 16:8 method involves fasting for 16 hours every day and only eating during an 8-hour window. You can eat your regular three meals during these 8 hours.
Be careful not to eat more food than you usually would during the non-fasting hours. Eating too much during the 8 hours in anticipation of the 16 hour fast will be counterintuitive to your goals.
And just keep in mind that, although this is one of the most popular methods of intermittent fasting, some research has cast doubt on its efficacy for weight loss.
The best time to fast: This is a commonly preferred method of intermittent fasting because the bulk of your fasting period will typically happen when you are asleep.
For most people using this method, eating an early dinner and skipping breakfast might be the most effective way to stick to the schedule. Say you ended dinner at 8 pm, your next meal will be an early lunch at 12 pm. You are allowed to drink water or other zero-calorie drinks as you fast.
