A peer-reviewed UK Biobank study of 409,000 people suggests that sleep disorders may increase the likelihood of glaucoma.
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterised by optic nerve damage. It starts and develops slowly, and if left untreated, it can lead to permanent loss of sight.
There are a number of possible reasons why bad sleep and glaucoma are interlinked.
One key reason is that when a person is lying down and when sleep hormones are destabilised, the internal pressure of the eyes rises. High intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve.
Another reason is that insomnia often leads to depression and anxiety, which can raise cortisol levels. Cortisol, the body's stress hormone, increases intraocular pressure.
Furthermore, sleep apnea can cause prolonged episodes of low cellular oxygen levels, which may also cause damage to the optic nerve.
The study found that insomniacs were 12% more likely to get glaucoma, people who suffered frequent daytime sleepiness were 20% more likely to develop it, and people who snored excessively had a 4% higher risk.

Your eyes need more antioxidants than most other organs, and vitamin C is especially important. Some studies suggest people who take vitamin C supplements are less likely to get cataracts.
5. Zinc
Zinc is an important antioxidant for eye function.
Research has found that zinc supplementation might slow the rate of macular degeneration and help to maintain visual sharpness in early sufferers of macular degeneration.
6. Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a group of fat-soluble antioxidants that protect fatty acids from harmful oxidation. As your retina has a high concentration of fatty acids, sufficient vitamin E intake is important for good eye health.
