I do love a good food quote. It’s such a stark reminder to me personally the ways I’ve always connected with people through food - over dinner, over wine, at the coffee shop, talking cultures and family histories. Im thankful for having such a great mum to teach me all the life lessons and for all the friends I’ve met along the way who constantly inspire me to strive towards being a better person in the mission I’m on to help others with their health journey.

I love the knowledge I’ve learnt on how food can heal yet destroy people. It provides comfort, a sensory pleasure, or a topic of conversation. It can cause conflict but can be used as a peace offering. It brings people together or it can drive them apart.

ā€œYou can’t eat processed foods to be healthyā€

I do get a little frustrated when I hear health professionals or nutritionists demonise ā€˜processed foods’. I appreciate how the long term impact eating ā€˜bad’ foods can be on your health. However people are getting so hung up in what they think they should eat that it’s blurring the lines of what constitutes behaviours or situations within the boundaries of real life.

Anything outside of a foods natural state is classed as ā€˜processed’. For instance:

Tinned tomatoes, cereals, yoghurt, but butters or bread would all fall into that. Yet these are perfectly fine to consume and actually aid with so so many nutritional benefits. They won’t cause harm if eaten in moderation.

In fact, Cereals benefit to children when fortified with iron and B vitamins, prevent anaemia and milk, fortified with vitamin D prevent Ricketts and aid growth development.

What people are really referring to are ultra processed foods (UPF). This can include anything from: frozen meals, like pizza, instance, soup, mayonnaise, ketchup, sweetened breakfast, cereals, candies, protein bars, ice, cream, cookies, margarine, and cream cheese.

Eating too much or too little of any food group can be detrimental to your health which why You have to have a balance. It’s why a balanced diet of varied food groups alongside pleasurable meals is just as important to our internal health as it is to our mental health.

You can Enjoy a glass of wine, chips with ketchup and ice cream guilt free as long as you’re eating a varied diet majority of the time!

(Ps. Here I’m making a chicken sandwich with Mayo, mustard, salad and bread!)
