Jeriah and his family are celebrating the one-year anniversary of his kidney transplant—please congratulate them! Jeriah came to our hospital from Stockton as a newborn, after local doctors noticed urine was backing up in his system.
Dr. Copp, a urologist at our hospital, successfully removed an obstruction, and our team also diagnosed Jeriah with several other kidney and urologic problems. Jeriah was stable for many years, but unfortunately his condition worsened when he was 11, and he joined the kidney transplant wait list in 2021.
Jeriah was thrilled to receive a new kidney in April 2022.
While Jeriah was in the hospital recovering, his classmates sent him handmade cards—and he even did a video chat with his entire class! Jeriah loves the Toy Story films and often delights staff and patients in our nephrology clinic wearing his “Woody” cowboy boots! He is back to enjoying 7th grade with his classmates and recently made the honor roll! 👢👢

In honor of Nowruz, President Biden, the First Lady, Vice President Harris, and the Second Gentleman celebrated the renewal of spring at the White House.
This week, as we all know, marked a solid year of the war in Ukraine. The people there have seen and experienced the worst. And I think of them so often as I move around in my comfortable world with access to hot baths and showers and clean clothes, and a place to wash the clothes and have good meals and sleep on a real mattress. Seeing their valor, that’s the word. Valor in the face of such devastation and loss and brutality and uncertainty has been a powerful thing to witness.

**"Stagecoach" Mary Fields (1832-1914)**
The first African American mail carrier (male or female) in the United States Mary Fields began her life as a slave in Tennessee in 1832, the exact date is unknown. Mary’s mother Susanna was the personal servant to the plantation owner’s wife, Mrs. Dunnes. The plantation wife also had a daughter who was born within two weeks of Mary, and named Dolly. Mrs. Dunne allowed the children to play together. Over the years Mary was taught to read and write and the two girls became best friends. At sixteen, Dolly was sent to boarding school in Ohio and Mary was left all alone. Mary’s father worked in the fields on the Dunnes’ farm. He was sold after Mary was born. Mary’s mother wanted her daughter to have a last name, so since her father Buck worked in the fields, her mother decided her last name should be Fields. So thus Mary Fields came to be. After Mary’s mother passed away, Mary became the head of the household at the young age of fourteen. After Dolly went away to boarding school, The Civil War began.
