Vitamin D and fibroids: are you getting enough?
In a 2019 study involving just under 6.5 million participants who had accessed primary healthcare, a third were found to be vitamin D deficient. When broken down by ethnicity this figure rose up to 66%.
Modern lifestyles mean that much of our time is spent inside, whether studying or working and as a result many of us miss out on adequate exposure to sunlight.
Vitamin D has apoptotic (killing unwanted cells), antiproliferative (suppressing growth of cells), inhibits angiogenesis (inhibition of the production of new blood vessels) qualities, making it a prime agent in the management of fibroids (a significant number of women diagnosed with fibroids also present with low vitamin D levels). Checking your vitamin D levels is easily done through your GP.
If you are not able to get out enough to get the appropriate exposure to sunlight, there are plenty of good quality vitamin D supplements that can be used to normalise your levels.

If you weren’t aware it is because many women simply suffer in silence. It is time to change this narrative and highlight the many ways in which support can be provided.
Watch this space for all things fibroid related (don’t worry I will still be regularly posting my take on inspirational quotes). 🙂
