Protect and improve your vision with science-backed eye health tips

In our screen-saturated world, blue light from phones, tablets, and laptops is everywhere. In addition, white LED lights also emit large amounts of blue light.

On the spectrum of visible light, blue light emits the most amount of energy, and it is the closest to UV.

Blue light's high-energy photons can affect your eye health by triggering oxidative stress. They can disrupt the corneal surface, causing tear film instability and surface irritation and leading to dry eye and digital eye strain. Meanwhile, they can also cause oxidative damage to photoreceptor cells in the retina. Over time, excessive blue light exposure might increase the risk of retinal conditions.

Blue light affects more than your eye health; it can also disrupt your circadian rhythm. Late-night blue-light exposure suppresses melatonin secretion, tricks your brain into thinking that it is still daytime, and makes it harder for you to fall asleep. Long-term circadian disruption can have wide-ranging negative effects on the body.

Protect your eyes and circadian health against blue light damage by wearing blue light glasses (especially at night), dimming screens after dusk, installing blue-light-filtering applications on your phone and desktop, and embracing 20-20-20 breaks (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds).

Ever wondered how we guarantee our supplements contain exactly what's on their label? We go beyond industry standards with advanced chemical testing.

We employ Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR): an analytical technique that uses infrared light to generate a molecular 'fingerprint' of a sample. We use this technology to test the raw ingredients of our supplements, and we also apply it to every batch of our supplements and compare it with the original batch.

While most brands stop at basic microbiological safety testing, our FTIR analysis verifies the following: pure ingredients at the right concentrations, complete absence of contaminants or adulterants, and perfect consistency between batches.

This level of scrutiny is uncommon in supplements, but we consider it absolutely necessary: your vision deserves the best, and you deserve certainty.

Most people think of omega-3 fatty acids in relation to heart and brain health, but these essential fatty acids are equally important for maintaining hydrated, comfortable eyes.

Your eyes have a complex tear film with three layers. The outermost oil layer prevents tears from evaporating too quickly. Omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA, support the meibomian glands that produce this protective oil barrier. Clinical research shows omega-3 supplementation can improve dry eye symptoms.

Beyond moisture, omega-3s, especially DHA, serve as a major structural component of your retina. They also possess powerful protective properties that defend delicate eye tissues against oxidative stress and inflammation.

While fatty fish like salmon and sardines provide excellent dietary sources, many people don't consume adequate amounts consistently. Supplements offering 1000-2000mg daily of combined EPA/DHA can help maintain optimal eye lubrication and comfort.

At Clearer Eyecare, our mission is to create the best eye health supplements in the world to help you protect and improve your vision. We have set three guiding principles for our supplement products:

1) Our supplement formulations need to be backed by peer-reviewed research. They must contain clinically validated ingredients at the right research-proven dosages.

2) Our supplements need to be as clean as possible, without artificial excipients such as magnesium stearate or silicon dioxide. Your eyes need nutrients -- not nasty fillers.

3) We must go above and beyond in our supplement testing. Most brands only conduct microbiological testing for supplement safety, but that does not reveal what is actually in their supplements. We use advanced chemical assays to ensure that every batch of our supplements is consistent and contains the stated formulation on the label.

If you take supplements every day, you have to look beyond marketing claims and check the quality of the products carefully. When it comes to health, quality matters so much more than convenience or price.

First, verify the formulations with reference to clinical research. Do the supplements contain adequate and effective dosages of the active ingredients? Are the formulations based on peer-reviewed studies? Beware of proprietary blends that hide actual dosages.

Second, check the formulations for artificial fillers. Many supplement manufacturers use excessive amounts of chemical excipients such as microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide to speed up manufacturing. They are unnecessary and might be harmful in excessive amounts.

Third, review manufacturing standards. Reputable brands provide third-party testing certificates and follow GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). Transparency about sourcing and purity testing signals quality.

Fourth, consider the form of the supplement and its bioavailability. Capsules are better for absorption than tablets, and some ingredients are fat-soluble and might be best delivered through liquid or softgel formats.

At Clearer Eyecare, we are committed to providing the highest-quality eye health supplements in the world. Your eyes deserve the best.

Your eyes depend on a delicate balance of moisture to function at their best. In our screen-dominated world, maintaining eye hydration has never been more challenging — or more important.

Extended screen time accelerates tear evaporation: when we are staring at a screen, we tend to blink less. Combat this by practising the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Consider using a humidifier in dry indoor environments.

When immediate relief is needed, preservative-free artificial tears can help: look for ingredients such as carmellose sodium and sodium hyaluronate. In addition, warm compresses for 5-10 minutes every day can help to maintain healthy oil gland function. Also remember to stay internally hydrated by drinking sufficient water.

Nutrition plays a crucial role too. Omega-3 fatty acids support oil-producing glands that prevent tear evaporation, while vitamins A and D contribute to tear film quality. Antioxidants such as vitamin E and bilberry extracts can help to combat inflammation that can disrupt natural tear production.

If persistent symptoms occur despite these efforts, consult an eye care professional. Your vision is precious and deserves expert attention.

Are you getting enough lutein and zeaxanthin for your eyes?

They are pigments found in high concentration in the macula, the part of your retina that is responsible for central vision.

Like sunscreen for your retina, these pigments help to absorb high-energy blue light.

They are also powerful antioxidants that protect against oxidative damage. When light rays hit the retina, photochemical reactions occur, which generate free radicals that can trigger oxidative stress and damage cells. Lutein and zeaxanthin help to neutralise those free radicals and protect the photoreceptor cells.

There is a significant inverse relationship between lutein and zeaxanthin levels in the retina and the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and research shows that supplementation of these nutrients may slow down AMD progression and improve visual function in AMD patients.

Furthermore, these carotenoids can help the eyes see better by increasing contrast sensitivity. Supplementation for young adults with excessive screen time was shown to not only improve visual performance but also reduce negative symptoms such as eye strain.

Their levels in the eye decline with age, so it is important to maintain an adequate level of intake. They cannot be synthesised by the body from scratch, so they must be obtained from diet or supplementation.

‘The retina ages faster than any other organ in your body.’ Professor Glen Jeffery (University College London)

The eye, especially the retina, is highly metabolically active. Whenever light enters the eye, it triggers photochemical reactions in the retina, which generate free radicals. These free radicals can cause oxidative stress and cellular damage. That is why photoreceptor cells in the retina are very prone to loss and also why the eye needs antioxidants to combat oxidative stress.

Don’t neglect your eye health. Regular eye exams, UV protection, and adequate nutritional support are key to maintaining clear vision.

Vision is commonly regarded as the most precious sense, but it is also the most vulnerable. Constantly bombarded by light rays, the eye is metabolically active and prone to oxidative stress. Unfortunately, eye health is rarely top of mind until something goes wrong and eye conditions appear. Take care of your eyes every day and protect your vision against age-related damage.
