Victory or Jaya in an āsana comes from conquering one’s urge for movement (rajas) in both thought 💭 (“I want to do something else”; “let me plan my weekend while I am in the posture” 😂) and body (“this variation is too easy for me, let me change”; “I am bored in this posture, let me spice it up! 😆) and the urge to push beyond one’s “sukha” or comfort-peace in the asana… things like pushing to hard, quite typical in pitta-kind of personalities like me 😆 , create tension and movement in the mind at the detriment of “sthira” (steadiness). This is why yogis like Iyengar used to say that “the posture begins when you feel like you want to come out of it” - This doesn’t mean at the expense of your health or at the risk of physical injury, as has very often been misinterpreted by many - It refers to the urges of “rajas” and “tamas”: the urge for more and the habit of finding satiety in something beyond the moment and myself, which quite evidently show up when we practice and are confronted with the need for “movement” or “pushing” 😆 The whole intent of an asana is to help you dismantle these tendencies, to create true physical and mental stability, quite necessary for when you are faced with your thoughts and the urge to run away from them when you thereafter sit in meditation!! 🧘 the natural byproduct of a practice well done 🕉️

Victory in an asana (Asana Jaya), comes from true steadiness (sthira) and equanimity (sukha) in the posture. It often helps to hold this in mind while practicing towards asanas that feel more challenging.

True practice is about the attitudinal ecosystem you create within yourself through the challenges that the posture presents…(which eventually dissolves, as effort becomes efficient through sthira 🙂 ). They go hand in hand 🙂 Sthira (steadiness) and Sukha (equanimity/ balance… it is hard to truly translate this word to English 😄)
