Most neck, shoulder and back tension is muscular.
It often builds slowly from desk work, stress, driving, poor sleep, heavy bags, training, or simply holding your body in the same position for too long.
That type of tension can often respond very well to personalised massage.
But not every symptom should be treated as “just tight muscles”.
Before booking a massage, there are two signs I always take seriously:
1. New numbness or weakness in your arm or leg
Especially if it comes on suddenly, affects one side, or is linked with face drooping, speech changes, balance problems or vision changes.
That is not something to “massage out”.
You need medical advice first — and if stroke symptoms are possible, call 999.
2. A sudden severe headache or unusual dizziness
If a headache feels sudden, intense, different from your normal pattern, or comes with dizziness, confusion, vomiting, vision changes, fainting, fever or neck stiffness, it should be checked medically first.
Massage is wonderful for muscular tension patterns.
But my job is also to know when massage is not the first step.
Your body gives signals.
