Radiators or Drains
I recently attended a talk and the speaker referred to a Charles Handy expression, “that positive energy is like a radiator and negative energy is like a drain”. If I had heard this in my youth I would not have understood it and when people talked about good and bad energy I thought it was just a hippy chick expression. However, now that I am older and, hopefully wiser, this really resonates with me and my life experiences.
I have even gone as far as to create my own expressions for some of the different types of energy I have encountered or personally experienced. Smile if you recognise any of the following:
Believe it like you have already received it Energy: – staying faithful even though you might not have achieved what you actually desire but believing it is on the way or that you have done as much as you possibly can to make it happen.
Calm, Confident and in control Energy: – this energy oozes out of your pores and lifts your mood sky high so that you feel as if you are walking on air or water.
Catch it without you even knowing it energy: – whether negative or positive, this contagious energy spreads like germ warfare and holds no regard for your immune system as everyone is susceptible to it.
Needy & Desperate Energy: – the type you give off when you are on the hunt or prowl for the opposite s*x, are running late for an important event and are desperate for that train or bus to arrive or for your car to move faster in the traffic, or if you think it is vital for you to win this week’s lottery.
Why does nothing good ever happen to me energy: – this is the signal you give off with all your words and deeds. You might as well have a big L for looser embossed on your forehead as it just feeds your self-fulfilling prophecy outlook on life. You are your own worst enemy, although you might not be aware of it.
Remember energy is a life force and, with a little practice or a change in attitude or mindset, we can chose to apply whatever energy we want to a situation. Just like a wax work model or the latest celebrity haunt, without energy it is just an empty shell or building. So be selective with the energy you chose and where possible that of those around you.
Life in the Fast Lane
Whilst watching the recent London 2012 Olympics Men’s 100 metre race I had a flashback of something an ex partner once said to me. He said that I lived my life in the slow lane and he was in the fast lane so we were incompatible.
He went on to describe himself as a fast sports car that had high energy, prowess and speed and was always racing ahead of others and finding competitive ways to overtake and get to the front. He didn’t believe in wasting time and wanted everything he did to be as efficient and effective as possible. Undeniably, this man was charming, intelligent and successful so this formula worked for him.
In comparison he said that I was like a car with a small engine that was travelling along at my hearts content and was happy to get to my destination whenever I arrived. Although at first I was defensive and in denial, I am a free spirit so can identify with this.
Only on reflection did I realise that although in some areas of life it is great to travel in the fast lane, you could also miss out on so much whilst life whizzes past you. He might be a Porsche and me a Mini, but at least on my journey I could wind my window down to look at the beautiful scenery, have stop offs along the way, and enjoy all the enriching experiences that life has to offer. I might get there at a slower pace but am fully present in the moment and constantly learning about myself and others en-route to my destination.
Usain Bolt was amazing and, as the fastest man in the world. I think he would still have been victorious in any lane.
As the old cliché says it is not about the destination but the journey, so what car would best describe you and which lane do you travel along in?
Here are a few testimonials I got from some of my lovely clients.
“After our coaching sessions, you always make me feel excited about life,”
“Thanks for being so completely brilliant. I now feel liberated and enthusiastic about clarifying my values and also getting control of my life”
“I think you are a fantastic intuitive and challenging coach and I have gained so much self-awareness from our sessions. I now believe that anything is possible”.
