■ Melasma often presents as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, commonly on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, and chin.

♻︎ Causes of Melasma

• Hormonal Changes: Common during pregnancy (often called “the mask of pregnancy”) and with the use of contraceptive pills or hormone replacement therapy.

• Sun Exposure: UV rays stimulate melanocytes, the cells responsible for pigment production, making melasma worse.

• Genetics: It may run in families, with a higher risk if melasma is common in one’s family.

• Epidermal: Pigmentation is closer to the skin’s surface, making it more responsive to treatment.
• Dermal: Pigmentation is deeper within the skin, often harder to treat.
