So proud of our team 💪
They work tirelessly every day to make sure you have somewhere to go when you have a dental emergency.
A lot goes on behind the scenes to ensure we provide the best service possible and keep our patients happy.
We were one of just a very small handful of emergency dental practices open throughout the pandemic.
Although the pandemic seems like a long time ago, we all remember the apprehension of coming to work when corona was at its peak, putting our lives on the line day after day, but we got through it as a team & what a team we are. X

Composite bonding, otherwise known as dental bonding or tooth bonding, is a procedure that involves changing the appearance of your smile for cosmetic purposes.
It is a way to cover mild damage like chips and cracks in your teeth, as well as any gaps in between them. It is a less invasive alternative to veneers if you are unhappy with teeth in your smile line.
Composite bonding is becoming more popular these days due to it being less invasive. We've had some amazing results here at Charlton Village Dental, keep an eye out for before and afters.
Your dentist will use a composite resin similar to what they use for minor fillings. This material is a putty-like substance that can be moulded to the desired shape, then hardened with a UV light and polished to closely resemble a natural tooth.

So what's the difference (apart from the colour) with amalgam (silver) fillings and tooth coloured fillings (composite)?
Amalgam fillings have been around a lot longer and are still being used in general dentistry today. There has been a lot of controversy regarding amalgam fillings and weather it is safe.
Our opinion at Charlton Village Dental is yes it is safe to use, otherwise we wouldn't use it. Our dentists and nurses & their families that have been naughty enough to get fillings have amalgam fillings in their own mouths.
Amalgam is a blend of different metal materials amalgamated together (hence the name)
It is a very tough material and can last years and years.
Composite fillings are tooth coloured, made from resin & a glass mixture & comes in many different brands and shades.
It has also been around for a long time, but not as long as amalgam. It is more of a sticky material and is cured with a light to set. Generally you can eat on it straight away but we do advise a sensible diet and to avoid any foods that may stain it for a few days.
The main reason people tend to have composite is the aesthetic component. Composite is almost undetectable to the eye when done well.

Will they both last the same amount of time? This is impossible to answer, there are many factors why fillings can last a lifetime or not long at all, these include the shape of the cavity, diet, how well you are looking after it, how well the filling has been placed.
Our dentists will always advise which material they think is best for your specific tooth, the pro's and con's but ultimately it is your decision.
In conclusion both materials are safe to use when the correct protocols are followed, the main difference is the appearance and your personal preference.

Fizzy drinks & energy drinks are very erosive & damaging to your teeth.
As with all food & drink, excessive consumption can really have a bad impact on your teeth. making them appear darker, more yellow & translucent.
Why does this happen? Well the erosive nature of the drinks wear away your enamel (the outer layer of your teeth)
Dentin (the inner layer, under your enamel) is yellow in colour. Once your enamel wears away, it exposes the dentin.
This causes sensitivity & decay/holes in your teeth.

There are a range of sensitive toothpastes on the market, but these will only deal with the sensitivity whilst being used. Once your enamel wears away, it won't grow back.

Fizzy drinks can be addictive and may take time to cut out of your diet.
Start with buying less from the supermarket, if it's not there, you can't have it!
Try upping your daily water intake.
Always go for the sugar free option if you really have to drink something fizzy.

What are the benefits of fluoride toothpaste?

There are many different types of toothpaste available on the market....fluoride toothpaste, non fluoride toothpaste, whitening toothpaste, charcoal toothpaste....the list goes on.

Here at Charlton village we do recommend you buy fluoride toothpaste rather than non fluoride toothpaste.

There are different strengths of fluoride toothpaste for different ages and even prescriptive fluoride toothpaste specifically recommended by your dentist.
Look at the side of the package, which will state the amount of fluoride.
Please see our list below for recommendation.

-1,000ppm of fluoride toothpaste for children under 3, use a smear only
-1,000ppm for ages 3-6 use a pea sized amount
-1,350ppm to 1,500ppm for children over 7 & adults

The benefits of fluoride toothpaste are:-

⭐️Preventing cavities and reversing early tooth decay

⭐️Strengthening weakened tooth enamel and making it more resistant to acids and
bacteria

⭐️Limiting the growth of oral bacteria and slowing the loss of minerals from tooth
enamel

⭐️Remineralizing tooth enamel by bonding to areas of decay and attracting other minerals

Both adults and children should spit toothpaste out instead of rinsing with water after brushing.

Always monitor children brushing their teeth. They will be unaware of how much toothpaste to use and may not spit it out effectively or brush properly.

Don't use mouthwash at the same time as brushing. Use it at an alternative time, because it washes away the fluoride in the toothpaste

Toothache can incredibly painful. If left untreated, it can cause further issues, so it is always best to act fast.

Call your dentist straight away if you are suffering from toothache. If you are not registered anywhere or are finding it difficult to get booked in, then call NHS 111.

In the meantime you can take pain killers as you normally would for a headache. Sometimes this can help, other times it may do nothing. It is important not to take too many pain killers, always follow the instructions on the packaging if you are unsure.

If the pain is worse when you are laying in bed, try popping an extra pillow or two under your head. Laying flat can sometimes make the pressure go to your head, making the pain feels worse.

Keep the area clean. Avoiding brushing the area will only irritate your gums and cause further issues. If the pain is worse with cold, try using warm water on your toothbrush rather than cold.

Don't panic and don't google! Leave it to the dentist to diagnose the problem. It is almost impossible for you to know what the issue could be. Even dentists use x-rays and other diagnostic tools to help them diagnose the issue.

It is important to note if you have any swelling. If you do have swelling, you should book an appointment sooner rather than later.

A soft diet is recommended to avoid chewing on the tooth.

We have had a influx of patients wanting to have dental makeovers abroad.
Here are some points to consider when making your decision.
We want you to be as informed as you can be before booking that flight.

A few questions to ask yourself...
Are you willing to keep travelling abroad to the same country to fix any issues you may have? The flights, the hotels all need to be taken into consideration.
You may be promised a one off treatment, however what if things go wrong.

Is your main concern the cost?
Have you considered the cost of hotels, flights etc for multiple visits if needed.

Did you know most UK dentists will not touch any work carried out abroad. This means if something goes wrong (toothache, swelling, broken veneers/bridges etc) you will have to travel all the way back to the country where you had the work carried out. That's a long time to have tooth ache.

Remember your decision will have a huge impact on your life either way. It is important you consider the pro's and con's beforehand.

What happens at a tooth whitening appointment?
There are 2 ways in which you can whiten your teeth at Charlton Village Dental Practice.
Today we will be discussing the at home whitening process. Look out for our post on In- surgery whitening coming soon!

Whitening gels have been used for many years, there are many brands and many products on the market.
By law only a qualified dental care professional should be carrying out tooth whitening treatments. This is to ensure the correct protocols are being followed for maximum safety and the best results.
A thorough check up should be carried out prior to any treatment, this is to ensure you are dentally fit and suitable to have the treatment done.
The dentist will then take impressions & send it to the lab to be custom made, to ensure a perfect fit.
These custom made trays take 2 weeks to be made.
You will then collect the trays and whitening gels & the dentist will explain how to use the gel and trays.
You will then follow the instructions at home.
In two to three weeks you can unveil your beautiful new smile.
