The Surgeon domus is a splendid example of a Roman residence of the 2nd century A.D. The name attributed to it derives from the important discovery of a surgical kit identified inside the structure. It is assumed that the owner"s name was Eutyches and that he was a military doctor of Eastern origin. The domus was destroyed by fire in the middle of the 3rd century A.D. The destruction of the domus was followed by the construction of new city walls, which partly incorporated the domus.
Around the 5th century A.D. a Late Antique Palace was built that partly overlooked the previous domus. The Palace through the polychrome mosaics with elaborate geometric patterns, an apsidal hall and a nymphaeum fountain testifies to the high degree of wealth of the owners. After the decay of the building, in the 6th century A.D., the area was used as a burial site as evidenced by some tombs discovered, some of which damaged the underlying floors
