INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
Concept, origins and development
Indian head massage originates from one of the worlds oldest healing systems, Ayurveda, and has been practised in India for centuries. Massages are an integral part of Indian life, especially family life. Massages have been used by mothers to bond with their children and head massages were used to treat their daughters hair. The practise of head massages was also adopted by barbershops for their clients where it was part of a morning routine to reduce stress and promote mental clarity. Indian head massage is also known as "champissage" - named after Narendra Metha's form of Indian head massage. Physiotherapist Narendra Metha is credited with introducing Indian head massage techniques to England in the 1970s. He extended the traditional Indian massage to a more holistic massage of the head, neck and shoulder region. A contemporary Indian head massage typically comprises shoulder, neck, scalp, arms massages as well as a facial massage. Indian head massage is ideal for clients who do not wish to undress for a massage or do not wish to have their feet touched. It is becoming increasingly popular among companies to offer massage treatments to staff at their workplace. Indian head massage can be practised almost everywhere, for example at offices, making it a portable stress-busting treatment.
Objectives
The objectives of Indian head massage are primarily to relieve from stress, help to prevent headaches and migraines, release muscular tension in the upper back region and generally to relax and rejuvenate the client.
Indian head massage has physical as well as spiritual benefits and may assist in the following:
Physical benefits
- Treat insomnia
- Relief nasal congestion
- Promote hair growth
- Detox the body
- Increase blood circulation
- Ease stiffness in the neck and shoulder region
Mental & spiritual benefits
- Boost memory
- Improve alertness and concentration
- Promote calmness, tranquility and a clear perspective
Therapy procedure
Indian head massage is usually performed with the client clothed or the top garment removed and seated in a chair. The therapist can massage with or without oil, depending on the client's preferences.
The client is massaged in stages which include:
- Upper back and shoulders region
- Arms
- Neck
- Scalp
- Face
A complete routine of an Indian head massage is approximately 40min long. However, it can vary depending on the environment and the client's preferences. For example, is the massage performed in a work environment for quick relaxation, the therapist can condense the routine by focusing on the more vigorous movements of this massage to relax the client, but avoid that the client may feel too sleepy to continue working. At a salon, the therapist may emphasise the calming and spiritual aspects of the Indian head massage and offer prolonged treatments.
