Advice for prepping before your tan…Our guide to the correct preparation ahead of your spray tan treatment.
Preparation of your skin before a spray tan is essential if you want to ensure your tan lasts longer
Read on for some specifics:

Remove unwanted hair
Try to shave or wax at least 24 hours before your spray tan. If you don’t remove unwanted hair, tanning solution will cling to your hair shafts, creating a dotty and uneven finish. Waxing is an excellent choice as it will prevent hair growth for up to a month but be sure to this well before your treatment. This will allow your follicles to close up, ensuring that your tan looks balanced, even and natural. Shaving too early after your tanning treatment will strip your skin of its caramel hue so waxing is an excellent option for prolonging your colour.
Exfoliate
The night before your tan exfoliate your skin with a gentle exfoliator or scrub to slough off the top layer of dead skin cells. Removing these cells will reveal the fresh skin cells beneath, which will form the smooth base that your spray tan will stick to. The fresher your skin cells, the longer the life of your tan – it’s as simple as that.
Apply nail polish
Your therapist will usually apply a barrier cream to your nails before you enter the spray tan booth to prevent tanning solution from staining your nail bed and cuticles. As part of your own spray tan preparation, apply nail varnish to your fingernails and toes before your treatment for an extra layer of protection.
Avoid perfumes and deodorant on the day of your tan because some of the chemicals found in these products can prevent fake tan from adhering to the skin smoothly. Also remember to tie your hair back and use a headband to stop any solution from getting on your hairdo. Bring along some loose clothing, like a baggy t-shirt or dress, to wear after your session, which will allow for your freshly applied tan to dry thoroughly.

How long will my spray tan last?
In general, your spray tan should last around a week, usually 5-7 days – but it will start to fade before this time gradually. This is because the skin will naturally continue to regenerate itself, and your old skin cells will be sloughed away over the week to reveal your paler skin beneath.

But there are a few things to keep in mind when looking at this. These include how well your skin holds onto a natural tan, how often you’re exfoliating your skin and how warm your showers and baths are, to name a few!

However, there are a few things you can avoid, which can help your tan to stay true for longer.

Try to avoid going swimming if you want to prolong your spray tan as chlorine can cause your tan to fade.
On the day of your spray tanning treatment take along loose-fitting dark clothes, so you don’t lose colour through contact with tight fabrics.
Showering can remove colour, so be aware that your washing routine will affect the longevity of your spray tan.
Soaking in the bath is particularly effective at fading the colour of your tan, so keep bubble baths to a minimum if you want your tan to stick around.
Moisturising daily will make a huge difference when it comes to retaining your golden glow too, so don’t skimp on your applications. This also has the bonus of keeping your skin silky smooth!
