I often get asked for hair care recommendations. I only recommend the product lines that I use at home and in salon, or that I believe offer the best support and experience. I can’t recommend supermarket products simply because I don’t know anything about them. That doesn’t mean they are terrible.

What I do know is that, as an example, Loreal owns the brands Kerastase, Loreal professional (as sold in salons), and Elvive. I know that L’Oreal’s R&D department is SO huge with SUCH a big budget that they are able to hire the best talent in the field to advance their products. I also know that every year there is a bidding war for the latest technology, and that the brands with bigger budgets, like Kerastase, win that war so they get the best quality ingredients and everything filters down from there. So whilst your supermarket label may well contain that key ingredient, they haven’t paid for the concentrations or quality that Kerastase paid for, and that’s the difference between your £4 supermarket shampoo and a £24 salon shampoo.

Is drugstore just as good as high end? Let’s break it down: Everyone has access to the same ingredients, there’s no such thing as “drugstore ingredients” and “premium ingredients”. But here’s the difference: budget. - Some of the ingredients can cost £30–£50 per kilo. If a shampoo is sold at £1, those just aren’t an option. - Big brands can buy in bulk and save. Smaller brands (like us) don’t have that scale, but we often prioritise quality over volume. - Retail: if you’re picking up your shampoo during your grocery shop, the brand might only keep 40% of the sale. That affects what goes into the bottle. So, what should you buy? Something that fits your budget, works for your hair, and comes from a brand that aligns with your values. Hope that helps!
