Today’s Google Doodle is celebrating the birth of cultural icon Louise Bennett-Coverley, affectionately called ‘Miss Lou’ on what would have been her 103rd birthday.

The Jamaican poet, folklorist, activist and entertainer – who lived in London for a period – empowered Jamaicans to take pride in our language and culture, bringing patois to the fore.

Miss Lou was a trailblazer in the industry, her sense of humour made her a well-loved personality across the country.

She also raised awareness on social issues through her work, all while receiving accolades for it.

For her art, she became famous in Jamaica during her life and now she is being introduced to the rest of the world through the latest Google Doodle.

The Google illustration you can see on the web page was drawn by Jamaican guest artist Robyn Smith.
