Mindfully observe your emotions.
What messages are they trying to tell you?

All emotions generate energy.

Our thoughts generate an electrical impulse; our body responds by releasing hormones; generating a magnetic response which we call emotions.

Emotions are messengers which provide an opportunity to become attuned to changes we need to make.

Instead of being controlled by our emotions, we can use them as signals to take action.
Action to change our perception and behaviour.
You can choose to shift your emotional state by changing your thoughts.

Our immune system and emotional responses are connected and work in equilibrium with each other.
Psychoneuroimmunology helps us to understand the interaction between our psychological processes, our immune system and endocrine system.

When we chronically repress emotions; these unprocessed emotions can become trapped leading to stress and inflammation; creating havoc within our immune system.
Our immune system’s proliferative response may decrease in chronically stressful situations and we can develop psychosomatic symptoms due to unprocessed emotions.

All emotions are messengers.
When we ignore our emotions because they are painful or distressing; we can lose access to important information which they are trying to tell us.
Anger is alerting you of mistreatment, injustice and letting you know that something is unacceptable.
Fear can alert us to potential danger which we need to address; whilst grief can help to confirm our love and process our loss.

The emotions which we view as negative; often help us realise what we don't want; consciously processing them helps us to refocus on what we do want.

When we stop perceiving undesirable emotions as negative, we can start to effectively process them.
When we decipher the message behind our emotions; we can empower ourselves.
Mindfully observe your emotions.

As the cold weather creeps in and day light reduces, our body goes through changes that can affect out mood and mental health.
Vitamin D is involved in converting the amino acid tryptophan into serotonin.

Vitamin D, which is even more difficult to absord during winter months in the UK, due to insufficient sunlight, is a critical player in the production of serotonin (one of our happy hormones 🙂).

To help counteract this deficiency, it's mportant to eat foods that support mood regulation.
These foods are: bananas, pumpkin seeds, cashew nuts, avocados and raw cacao, fatty fish, egg yolks and mushrooms.

Have a happy winter ahead!!

Yours in health,

Lorena (Lolly)

Temperature receptors in the skin detect changes in the external temperature.
This triggers nerve impulses to transmit signals to the hypothalamus located at the base of the brain.

In response to cold weather; the hypothalamus sends messages to the arterioles of the skin resulting in contraction and limited blood flow.

We are governed by circadian rhythms, which help to regulate our sleep/wake cycles and mood. These rhythms can be disrupted during the winter season.
Many individuals experience changes in their mood, energy levels and sleep patterns as the seasons change.

During winter's long dark days, the lack of sunlight increases the production of melatonin. This puts our circadian rhythms out of phase with our actual sleep-wake cycle.

The shift phase hypothesis states that this internal misalignment is linked to seasonal affective disorder and depressive symptoms.

Vitamin D is involved in converting the amino acid tryptophan into serotonin.

The primary source of vitamin D is sunlight.
However during winter months in the UK, sunlight does not contain enough UVB radiation for our skin to make vitamin D.
There has been a proposed link between decreasing levels of vitamin D and serotonin for mood fluctuations, especially during winter months.

Therefore it is important to eat foods that support mood regulation. Mood boosting carbohydrates in bananas aid the absorption of tryptophan; which is a precursor to serotonin.
Pumpkin seeds, cashew nuts, avocados and raw cacao are also great sources of tryptophan.
Foods with a high vitamin D content include fatty fish, egg yolks and mushrooms.

Although sleep appears to be a passive and restful time; it actually involves a highly active and well-scripted interplay of brain circuits, resulting in sleep’s various stages.

Sleep helps your brain work effectively.
Whilst you are sleeping; your brain is forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information.

The pineal gland, located within the brain’s two hemispheres, receives signals from the Suprachiasmatic nucleus and increases production of the hormone melatonin, which helps put you to sleep once the lights go down.

Each night during the first hour of sleep (non rapid eye movement), the brain progresses through a series of stages during which brain waves slow down.
This period of slow wave sleep is accompanied by relaxation of the muscles and the eyes. Heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature all fall.

During REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, active dreaming can take place.
The pons located in the brainstem sends signals to relax muscles essential for body posture and limb movements.
This causes the body to be immobile during REM sleep. This prevents you from acting out your dreams.

During the night, these cycles of slow wave and REM sleep alternate, with REM periods more prolonged until waking occurs.

Sleep-promoting cells produce a chemical called GABA, which acts to reduce the activity of arousal centres in the hypothalamus and the brain stem.

Sleep deprivation is connected to decreased attention and memory. It can also impair your emotional state and decision making capabilities.

The glymphatic system is a pathway where the brain disposes waste filled cerebrospinal fluid.
The glymphatic system works best whilst we are asleep; so sleep deprivation reduces the efficiency of this disposal system.
Prolonged sleep deprivation can impair the brains ability to effectively remove waste and toxic proteins.

On that note; please make sure you get a good nights sleep!
