Many people believe wrinkles are simply a “natural part of getting older,” but that’s not entirely true. In reality, wrinkles develop through two main processes: intrinsic aging and extrinsic aging. These two work together to determine when lines appear and how deep they become.
1. Intrinsic Aging (Genetics / Age / Hormones)
This is the natural biological process that no one can completely escape:
Loss of collagen and elastin fibers: As we age, fibroblast activity slows down, reducing the production of collagen types I and III, as well as elastin. The skin gradually loses firmness and elasticity.
Dryness and fine lines: With lower sebum production and fewer natural moisturizing factors, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases, making fine lines more visible.
Hormonal changes: In women, declining estrogen during menopause accelerates collagen loss, leaving the skin thinner and more fragile.
2. Extrinsic Aging (Modifiable Factors, Mainly Photoaging)
Environmental and lifestyle factors often play an even greater role than genetics:
UV damage: UVA and UVB rays generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which activate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). These enzymes break down collagen and are central to the process of photoaging.
Glycation (AGEs): High-sugar diets lead to “glycated” collagen fibers that become stiff, brittle, and less functional, reducing skin elasticity.
Unhealthy habits: Smoking, pollution, chronic stress, and poor sleep drive chronic inflammation and poor circulation, impairing the skin’s ability to repair itself.
Repetitive facial expressions: Everyday movements such as frowning, squinting, or raising the eyebrows repeatedly pull on the skin. Over time, dynamic wrinkles form and eventually settle into static wrinkles.
Additionally, as we age, the fat pads beneath the skin shrink and facial bone volume decreases. With less structural support, deeper folds and sagging lines become more apparent.
Common Types of Wrinkles and Their Causes
Dryness/fine lines: Often linked to dehydration and barrier damage, and can look more pronounced in the short term.
Dynamic wrinkles: Caused by repeated muscle contractions—such as frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.
Static wrinkles: Present even at rest, mainly due to collagen and elastin loss.
Gravity/sagging wrinkles: Such as nasolabial folds or marionette lines, caused by volume loss and ligament laxity.
Sleep lines: Resulting from years of side-sleeping or friction from rough pillowcases, creating fixed creases.
