This is something I’ve stayed quiet about for too long.

People see the finished treatment, but they don’t see everything that goes into it. They don’t see the rent I have to pay just to keep my business open. They don’t see the childcare I arrange so I can be there for your appointment. They don’t see the money I invest in products, training, insurance, and equipment. They don’t see the hours that go into running a business outside of appointments.

What they do see is someone they think it’s okay to let down.

No matter how I’m feeling, I turn up. If I’m tired, overwhelmed, stressed, or having a bad day, I still show up because that’s what professionals do. I don’t text you an hour before and say, “I can’t be bothered today.”

Yet somehow it’s become acceptable for beauticians to be treated this way.

Last-minute cancellations. No-shows. Turning up late without an apology. Messages saying, “I’ll pay you when I get paid” after you’ve already walked out feeling amazing.

Every missed appointment is money I can’t get back. Every late payment means I’m the one left worrying about how my rent, childcare, bills, and business expenses will be covered. Being self-employed doesn’t mean I have endless money sitting in the bank—it means if I don’t earn, I don’t get paid.
