It was a pleasure hosting a wide selection of healthcare professionals for their cosmetic PRP training in The Marriott, Hale, Manchester.

Our delegates greatly enjoyed the hands on practice which filled them with confidence as well as running through financials and practical tips on how to set up your own clinic.

An overview of the layers created in plasma with a centrifuge:

Disclaimer: Please note correct the correct Relative Centrifugal Force (RCF) needs to be applied to do this correctly.

The first key point is that despite there being three distinct layers biochemically within plasma, these layers are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye on inspection.

The goal of proper technique is to capture the bottom two layers in their entirety to promote either hair growth or skin rejuvenation. These two are:

PRP - An area rich in platelets which release growth factors when activated.

Buffy Coat - A very small, focal meniscus of densely concentrated growth factors. This can also be high in Leucocytes depending on modality.

Question: Do I have to inject ALL of the plasma?

PPP has a much lower concentration of growth factors compared to PRP and the Buffy coat - it is not of critical importance it be injected compared to the bottom 2 layers. However, it is good practice not to let this go to waste as it can also be applied as a serum following Microneedling.

How do I know which area is which?

A safe rule of thumb:

The top 2/3 of the yellow plasma is PPP.
The bottom 1/3 is PRP + Buffy coat.

Once PPP is removed the tube can be gently inverted to allow the buffy coat to evenly distribute throughout the sample.
