Such an interesting conversation/topic and it really got me thinking… 👀☀️

Her opinion was that if your main fear is skin cancer/melanoma, we don’t need to be terrified of not wearing SPF every single day in the UK when our sun exposure is generally quite low.

My stance after chatting with her is this…

If a client is worried about pigmentation, premature ageing or collagen breakdown, then yes, UV exposure still plays a role even on cloudy days or during short periods outside, so SPF absolutely still has a place. However that exposure is minimal on a cloudy day in the UK where you’re barely outside.

But if melanoma/skin cancer is their concern, it’s a cloudy day and they’re barely outside, then daily SPF isn’t necessarily something we need to be so fearful over…

I also think there has to be some balance. I don’t personally think living in fear of the sun or obsessing over every tiny bit of exposure is healthy either, especially when vitamin D deficiency is already such a huge issue in the UK because we don’t exactly get loads of sun as it is!

For me it’s all about being sensible and still enjoying your life!
Long periods in direct sun? Absolutely wear SPF.
Want to wear it daily for ageing prevention? I completely get that too!

But I would love to know everyone else’s thoughts on this conversation because I think it’s such an interesting one 👇

The advancements we now have in dermatology and skin cancer detection are incredible and it really made me realise how important these kinds of innovations are when it comes to early detection and understanding our skin better.

I also had the loveliest sit down chat with Dr. Veronique Patel who was SO knowledgeable and genuinely fascinating to speak to!

We spoke about things I think a lot of you will find really interesting… including whether we really should be wearing SPF every single day 👀☀️

Your work should be loud enough that you never need to tear another practitioner down to be heard…🤍

I honestly think a lot of this type of content comes from wanting engagement and views by being “controversial” or by bashing a treatment loads of people love in the hope it makes people sit up and listen. But like I said… there’s a huge difference between educating and completely tearing apart something someone else does, offers or stands for.

There are SO many ways to create thought-provoking, engaging content without choosing the most negative approach!

And from having a community of hundreds of practitioners inside , it’s become really obvious to me how many people feel scared or intimidated to share their opinions, techniques or approach online because of the constant criticism thrown at practitioners for offering certain treatments or recommending certain products.

This industry should feel collaborative, not intimidating.

There’s already enough negativity in the world right now, the last thing we need is more of it within our own industry too!
Be mindful with your words, your content and the way you speak about other people’s work.

And if you’re a gorgy, kind skincare practitioner who loves learning from others, even when their approach might look different to your own… just know there’s hundreds of us inside 😆🤍

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so in light of that I’m heading down to  in London for a full body skin scan using their incredible new AI imaging technology.

The machine is able to detect and monitor even the smallest changes in the skin over time, which is so fascinating to me and SUCH an important step forward when it comes to early detection.

I’m going to be documenting and filming the whole day so I can show you exactly how the technology works, what the scan involves and why these kinds of checks are so important.
