What blood tests should men consider in their 40s?

Number one: A full blood count with haematinics – including ferritin- (we take low ferritin more seriously in men and post menopausal women)
, vitamin B12, and folate.

Number two: Liver and kidney function tests.

Number three: A lipid profile to check your cholesterol levels.

Number four: HbA1c to screen for diabetes or prediabetes.

Number five: Thyroid function tests, if clinically indicated.

And don’t forget your observations: blood pressure, pulse rate, oxygen saturation, weight, and BMI are all important parts of a health check.

If you have eczema, choosing the right moisturizer can make a big difference.

💧 Dry eczema or very dry skin?
Ointments are usually the better option because they are thicker, greasier, and do a better job of locking moisture into the skin.

💦 Wet or weeping eczema?
Creams are often preferred because they are lighter, less greasy, and tend to be more comfortable on inflamed, weeping skin.

🚿 One of the biggest mistakes people make is continuing to wash with regular soaps. Soap can strip away your skin's natural oils and make eczema worse. Instead, use an emollient as a soap substitute if your doctor or pharmacist recommends one.

📝 It's also important to keep a symptom diary. This can help you identify possible triggers such as certain soaps, detergents, fabrics, stress, heat, or other factors that may be causing your eczema to flare up.

🩺 Keep moisturizing regularly and see your doctor so they can assess the severity of your eczema and prescribe treatment if needed. Once your eczema is well controlled, your doctor may recommend stepping down to maintenance treatment, such as "weekend therapy" with a topical steroid on two consecutive days each week to help prevent flare-ups.

Perimenopause can begin several years before menopause. If a woman does not have any contraindications to hormone replacement therapy (HRT), she may be offered HRT after discussing the benefits and risks with her doctor.

HRT may not be suitable for everyone. Some of the main contraindications include:
- Oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers.
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not yet been investigated.
- A recent heart attack or stroke.
- A history of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), particularly if not adequately assessed or managed.
- Active liver disease.
- Untreated endometrial (womb) cancer.
- Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy.

The symptoms of perimenopause can sometimes overlap with those of depression, anxiety, thyroid disorders, and vitamin deficiencies. That is why taking a thorough history is so important. Asking about other symptoms of perimenopause, such as hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog, poor sleep, mood changes, hair thinning, vaginal dryness, painful s*x, reduced libido, urinary urgency, and recurrent urinary tract infections, can help point towards the correct diagnosis and ensure women receive the most appropriate treatment.

Before you opt in to surrogacy, please watch this.

If you’re considering becoming a surrogate, no matter how urgent your financial situation may be, please don’t sign anything until you’ve received independent legal advice.

Have a lawyer who represents your interests alone, not the agency’s or the intended parents’. Make sure someone explains your rights, your responsibilities, the medical risks, and exactly what you’re agreeing to before you make a decision.

An informed decision is always the safest decision.

Unfortunately, many women still lose their lives every day due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

When choosing where to receive your maternity care and give birth, there are important factors to consider. One of them is choosing a hospital with a strong track record of managing maternity emergencies and good maternal outcomes.

Personally, I experienced postpartum haemorrhage after giving birth, despite having an uncomplicated labour and delivery.

Signs and symptoms of postpartum haemorrhage may include:

• Excessive or uncontrolled bleeding
• Passing large blood clots
• Feeling faint or dizzy
• Headache
• Extreme tiredness or weakness
• Chest pain
• Palpitations or a racing heartbeat

These symptoms may be associated with significant blood loss and low circulating blood volume.

Please choose a safe place to give birth, and if possible, have someone with you who can advocate for you when something doesn’t feel right.

I am not fearmongering. I am raising awareness. Pregnancy and childbirth can be unpredictable, and recognising when something is wrong can save a life. ❤️

Heavy periods aren’t something you just have to put up with. 💛

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the womb. While many people have no symptoms, others may experience heavy periods, pelvic pain, bloating, frequent urination, or fertility problems.

If these symptoms sound familiar, please speak to your doctor. The earlier the cause is identified, the sooner you can discuss the treatment options that are right for you.
