Dear all.
I hope you’ve all been enjoying the festivities in whatever way you celebrate them.

Firstly, please let me say a huge thank you to you all for supporting us in 2025. I can’t believe we are still here when so many other brilliant establishments have had to close their doors after the Covid pandemic.

Although I am pleased to say we continue to be busy, the rising costs of everything on top of the debts we are still paying back after Covid have forced me to take a look at how we can keep Café Roya going – because I’m not ready to stop!

As some of you may remember, 15 years ago, when I was at The Flying Goose I used to change my menu every week. I loved going out, picking ingredients and experimenting. Moving to a larger premises meant more than just me in the kitchen so I needed recipes and instructions that others could follow. With this and labour costs in mind I changed to a monthly menu which I believe has worked very well.

As we move into 2026 I have one main goal – to focus even more on making ethical, sustainable choices whilst making enough for Café Roya to survive. I now realise long gone are the days where I could simply pick whatever I fancied and create a menu because good ingredients are too expensive to buy in small quantities.

In 2026, therefore, my main aim is to create a menu that incorporates all the things you love about Café Roya - ONE special menu which will enable me to buy larger quantities of grains, pulses, flours etc from ethical suppliers, whist still getting the best fruit and vegetables each day from our local greengrocer’s. I love the monthly changing menus as much as you all do but I need to close a couple of doors for new ones to open and for the restaurant to survive. I will keep our daily salad and soup selection on our specials board, available all day to either eat in or as a healthy take-away for your lunch/dinner. I will also create a separate menu for special times of the year eg. Christmas/New year.

Once the new menu is up and running, the time saved creating it each month and training staff (as this pretty much all of my spare time!) will be used to focus on new projects I’ve been wanting to do. I would love to offer some Persian cookery classes and begin writing that cook book! I’m really excited about this and hope you can understand why I need to make these changes.

Secondly I need your help because I would love to know what you, my customers, want! Over the years I’ve cooked so many dishes, some of which I’m sure I have forgot! What would you like to see on our menu? What has been your favourite Café Roya dish over the years?

Also are there any other days/times you would like to see us open, drinks you’d like to see available or events you’d like us to bring back?

Thirdly, I want you, as the Café Roya community to know that I have also set up a crowd funder to hopefully help get us out of the red as the interest rates from our bounceback loan are extortionate. Lastly, I want you to know that I couldn’t have made it through the last few years without the ongoing support of all of our regulars. I feel vulnerable putting this post out there but I feel that Café Roya is a family with so many members and that’s why I value your input so much.
