Good afternoon all,
Sorry to have to bring this yet it was inevitable. The last few budgets from the government have made it very difficult for small businesses to survive.
Those of you who run businesses will understand about the VAT threshold. We have cut costs all we can. We no longer have apprentices and we cannot take on any more staff through fear of being VAT registered.
The only salon in Long Eaton that is VAT registered is Keith Halls, this is the reason why they are more expensive than everyone else. Tax.
With the rise of national insurance cost in the budget this has made wage bills go up, our products go up, water go up, electric go up ect.
Now in April 2026 council tax for businesses which is called “business rates” is going up massively (some shops up by 300%!) Plus another wage increase.
Soon, I will be reassessing our pricelist, hoping that our takings do not hit the VAT threshold. If this happens, I will have to charge an extra 23% more on top of the price increase that is already coming in soon.
I have spoken with the MP’s of Erewash and Broxtowe to explain the problem.
Rent a chair Salons do not take as much money although they often look busier because they have lots of people running their own businesses within them. They will not be VAT registered so therefore their prices will be 23% less than everywhere else that has employees. Salons that are generally expensive are this way because of the tax system.
