Shiatsu is a touch-based therapy that usually takes place on a futon mat and through loose, comfortable clothing.
Shiatsu techniques include the use of thumb and palm pressure, stretching and rotation to rebalance and revitalise.

All you need is hands – by applying sensitive, mindful, static touch with thumbs, fingers and palms, the Shiatsu giver affects the functioning of physical systems such as nervous, circulatory and respiratory, thus supporting the body’s innate self-healing abilities and promoting a sense of relaxation and well-being.

Shiatsu – part of your holistic lifestyle - Shiatsu works best when it’s not simply a treatment in isolation. The holistic approach means your whole way of being and living is taken into consideration. Your practitioner will carefully consider your lifestyle as well as any specific symptoms you might be having. Because Shiatsu is so accessible, you may find that your practitioner gives you exercises to try at home as well.

Shiatsu is suitable for everyone. We are all familiar with the healing power of touch, whether that’s a hug, a reassuring hand or localised massage on a knotted muscle. Shiatsu is particularly suitable for everyone since you remain clothed, and it can be given seated or lying down. The slow and sustained holding pressure that characterises Shiatsu encourages relaxation of the mind and body.

Give yourself the gift of receiving or learning simple, sustainable Shiatsu this February in .
The experiences of the last few years have shown how vital touch is to our health and wellbeing. Without touch we can feel lonely and depressed. Positive, compassionate touch can soothe our minds and bodies, stimulating feel-good hormones and regulating the nervous system.
Shiatsu offers simple touch techniques - pressure on acupoints, gentle stretches, palming on muscles – which put us back in touch with ourselves, promoting a sense of positive health and wellbeing.
Touch is a universal need and touching a universal ability – what is more sustainable than a pair of hands!

News from Belgium
As part of our Shiatsu Resources Worldwide initiative, we recently hosted a meeting with some folk in the East.
Paul Spence, president of the Australian Shiatsu Association (STAA), Evelyn Stavrinidis, a Shiatsu therapist who had responded enthusiastically to our posts here and Philippe Vandenabeele, currently resident in Japan.
During the conversation, Philippe informed us of some highly relevant work done in Belgian hospitals by students at his school. Here are a few excerpts:
Since September 2018, Shinzui Bodywork International Institutehas been involved in providing Shiatsu treatments to HIV-positive patients from a disadvantaged background. This initiative was launched in cooperation with CETIM, a specialized centre at Brussels’ Saint Pierre hospital, offering medical, social, psychological and nutritional support to over 2,500 HIV-positive patients.
The practitioners were able to treat patients with severe health issues, accompany them over several weeks and observe their development. Practitioners were warmly welcomed by the patients who showed their respect and gratitude for the treatments. Most of them had never heard of Shiatsu before but were quickly appreciative of its positive effects. Their sincere words of thanks and the happy smiles greatly rewarded the personal investment of the practitioners, without whom this initiative could not exist.
We hope to develop this project in the coming months and years, thus spreading the word about Shiatsu beyond its usual borders and amongst a population which is truly in need of an authentic body-mind therapy and can greatly benefit from the effects of Shiatsu.
