PART 2: ASMR is a soothing, often calming feeling that starts with a tingle on your scalp and travels down your neck and spine. It’s usually triggered by soft sounds like whispering or tapping, or by gentle visuals that give you a sense of being cared for. People often use it to help them sleep better, feel less anxious and manage stress. It creates a ‘brain massage’ feeling that is generally seen as a positive, non-sexual pleasure.

- Common triggers include whispering, soft speaking, tapping, crinkling sounds, slow, deliberate hand movements and visuals that simulate personal attention, like haircuts or eye exams.
- People usually feel calm, relaxed or ‘tingly’, which can lead to a trance-like state or help them fall asleep.
- While we don’t know everything about it, research suggests it activates brain areas linked to pleasure and reward, which might lower your heart rate.

In the Quiet Halls of Calais, Walks a Miracle on Four Legs

In a hospital in Calais, France, where the air is thick with final goodbyes and the silence of waiting hearts, a former show horse named Peyo has become something extraordinary.

He does not wear a white coat. He carries no stethoscope.

And yet, they call him Doctor Peyo.

Once a proud stallion in the world of competitive dressage, Peyo chose a different path. One that defies logic. One that science still struggles to explain. He now walks softly from room to room in the palliative care unit—not led, not commanded—but guided by something higher.

When Peyo stops outside a patient’s door and gently raises his hoof, his longtime companion Hassen Bouchakour understands: Someone inside needs love. Someone is in pain. Someone is ready.

Inside, he stands still beside beds where breath is shallow and time is short. Patients reach for him instinctively. Families place a trembling hand on his back. Nurses say the room changes. The energy softens. Grief exhales.

Peyo never rushes. He stays as long as needed—sometimes hours. Not to heal, but to hold. To bring grace where medicine cannot.

Since 2016, this 15-year-old stallion has chosen this sacred duty. He walks among the dying with reverence, sensing what others cannot. And somehow, always, finding the ones who are closest to letting go.

Some say their pain lifts when he enters. Others whisper that he brings peace where even prayer has struggled to reach. There are fewer tears. Sometimes even laughter. Always presence.

His story is not about magic.

It’s about the unseen threads that connect us. The quiet knowing that love doesn’t need language. That sometimes, the most powerful thing you can offer… is simply to be there.

Peyo is a reminder that healing is not always a cure.

Sometimes it’s a horse resting his head gently in your lap, in the final hours of life—offering no words, just companionship, calm, and a stillness that says:

You are not alone.

Neither my words, nor my images would do justice to the extraordinary holistic practitioner that is Susie Pritchard I saw Susie for treatment at Spa last year that offered a glimpse into her practitioner skills set, but I was completely blown away by the body & face treatment that she gave me today. I escaped London as soon as my kids reached their schools & this alone felt like a rare treat. Susie’s treatment room in Oxford is an oasis of calm & every single detail, from the placement of tools to music is perfect, based on her years of professional experience. From the warm towels you get under to the smoothly adjustable massage table, the individualised essential oil blend & the incredible synchronicity of her movements. When did her fingers become a brush & then her fingers again? She is like a body detective, finding the points & releasing them in a way I haven’t experienced before. Her hands are strong on the body & light as a feather on the face & and head. As to her feet reflexology? Again, no words can do justice & have to be experienced in person. Susie asked me about my health & needs, but her protocol was uniquely tailored to me today, to the extend I was glad I chose not to drive, but take a train to Oxford instead. My thought I was sleeping - I wasn’t, but barely - and on occasion I asked Susie questions, because talking to her is educating yourself about physical body & its needs. I was completely happy to entrust myself to Susie, but she paused & said that its one thing for you to trust a practitioner, its another whether your body trusts her. I have been lucky to experience many different treatments over the years, but travelling to see Susie in Oxford is absolutely worth it, especially when you consider that more & more London spas charge upwards of £450 for an hour’s treatment - and you leave with an amalgam of criticism, like a facialist applying a mask & leaving you, while annoying music drones on. I left grounded & serene, my hips opened up, my mind calm, my chest fully open, when for the last few weeks the seasonal virus refused to let go of its grip on me. 👇🏻
