When I started my own beauty business, I thought I was just building a career doing something I loved.

I never expected how much it would change me.

Over the last 8 years, I’ve learned things about myself that I probably wouldn’t have learned any other way.

I’ve had to make decisions I was scared of, take risks without knowing how things would turn out and learn to trust myself a little more.

I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way. I’ve changed my plans, questioned my decisions and started over more than once.

But I’ve also become more confident in who I am and what I want from life.

And one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that I don’t want to spend my whole life working just to enjoy it someday.

I still have so many goals for my academy and my future, but I want to enjoy the journey too.

Looking back, I started a business to change my income, but it ended up changing so much more.

After 8 years in the beauty industry, I’ve learned that being a good nail technician and running a profitable nail business are two completely different skills.

Here are 5 things every nail tech should understand:

1. Your appointment time isn’t your only working time.

Cleaning, sterilising tools, replying to messages, ordering products and creating content are all part of running your business.

2. Being fully booked doesn’t mean you’re profitable.

A full diary looks great, but what matters is how much money you actually keep after expenses.

3. Your prices should reflect more than your products.

You’re charging for your time, skills, experience, knowledge and the cost of running a professional business.

4. Not every service makes you the same profit.

A £55 appointment that takes 90 minutes can earn you less per hour than a £45 appointment that takes 60 minutes — even before expenses.

5. Improving your technique is important. But understanding your numbers can change your business.

You don’t always need more clients.

Sometimes you need better pricing, better systems and a clearer understanding of what your work is worth.

Beautiful nails attract attention. A well-managed business creates opportunities. 🤍
