You might have seen the distinctive circular cupping marks on many athletes at the Olympics or Wimbledon and wondered, what are they and what are they for?
The answer... Dry cupping. This treatment uses suction to create a vacuum within the cup pulling the skin and underlying tissue into the cup. This increases blood circulation and supports healing. The cups can be left still, glided over the skin or a combination of both.
Dry Cupping has additional benefits including:
- Stretches tight fascia, muscles and connective tissue to increase mobility at a joint.
- Increases the removal of chemical irritants in the muscles and fascia.
- Removes 'stagnant blood' within the tissue to be replaced with fresh oxygenated blood.
- Helps the tissue develop new blood flow and stimulate the healing process.

Yesterday we learnt why we may get joint pain during the "Menopausal period" but, there are things we can do to help reduce it.
Stay well hydrated!! Our joints are full of cartilage and synovial fluid that contain up to 80% water. So its recommend to drink 1.5-2 litres per day.
Up the exercise. I know that is a swear word to many but, movement helps with lubrication of the joints reducing stiffness and pain. It also helps with increasing the thickness of cartilage.
Anti-inflammatory diets, yes another swear word! But you don't need to cut out the wine and chocolate just yet.
Foods like fatty fish, leafy greens, nuts and certain fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds. Inflammation in the joints can lead to significantly more pain for some.
Joint pain assessment to rule out pathology. It's often easy to blame menopause or age for pain that could be resolved.
Massage and manual therapy with mobilisation of stiff and restricted joints can reduce surrounding muscle tension to ease the pain.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) replace the hormones estrogen and progesterone to reduce the symptoms experienced during menopause . This will need a GP's prescription.
It is recommended that a mixture of all these measures have the greatest chance to reduce joint pain. It is also important to note that each person will vary and what works for one may not work for another. It is advised to seek medical advice if you are struggling with any "menopausal" symptom.
Next, why does menopause cause muscle pain?

Are you experiencing more joint pain than usual? Are you aged between 41-51? Did you know that being "Pre/Post menopausal" could be responsible?
Estrogen is responsible for regulating fluid levels in the body. During Pre/Post menopause your estrogen levels can fluctuate and decline significantly.
Your joints contain "shock absorbers" and lubrication called cartilage and synovial fluid. In tandem they help cushion and reduce friction within the joints.
Cartilage and synovial fluid have a high water content and dehydration/ reduction in estrogen can reduce the cartilages ability to absorb compression and wear. This can cause inflammation with the joint.
Inadequate fluid levels in the joints are more likely to cause achy, stiff or "burning joints".
Studies have also shown that women who suffer from hot flushes, also suffer with more joint pains.
Tomorrow I will share how you can reduce "Menopausal" joint pain.

Here are some of the many symptoms of menopause!
Some women will only have mild symptoms, while some will experience them more intensely. Generally everyone will have a few on this list but some will unfortunately have many.
