Although this service is just for earwax removal, I do look at and check that people’s hearing aids are working ok before I go. These are usually private or NHS ones but occasionally I see some that are bought online or from a magazine which invariably don’t work correctly. This one came apart then got lodged deep in the ear canal which could have been dangerous but I was able to remove it safely.

If anyone is considering a hearing aid, make sure you go through a reputable local provider or the NHS.

Next week is Tinnitus Awareness Week. Those who have it already don't need any more awareness as it's there, in their head. ALL the time. If you're hearing a new buzzing or ringing noise in your ears when you normally don't hear it, its likely to be due to a blockage of earwax.

For many people, the tinnitus they hear is just them picking up their pulse or heartbeat more strongly in the head because of blocked ear canals. Clearing the blockage normally gets everything hearing wise back to normal.

If you find yourself wondering if other animals create earwax then, yes they do! It mostly forms in mammals like cats but the most documented and interesting is that of whales as you can tell quite a lot from their earwax plugs which in Blue Whales can form up to 10inches in length. It can give information on how old the whale was, what stress levels it was under due to whaling / noise from shipping and world wars along with how often they fed.

A large wax plug also helped them hear better in water due to being similar in density, the exact opposite of what it does to a human's hearing through air.

I often get asked 'What is the best way to clean your ears?". The best thing to do is nothing as for most people, your ears do it themselves which these pictures show.

These images were taken by me over a 5 month period which from the left show a textbook eardrum then the middle one was 3 months later where you start to see the top layer of skin detach from the ear drum. 2 months after that on the right is where it has moved further down the ear canal. It does this all the way to the entrance where small amounts of wax either fall out into the co**ha bowl of the outer ear or get washed away under a shower. So don't put cotton buds in there or you are pushing back against what your ear is trying to do for you!
