The Founder of Tropic is an incredible lady called Susie Ma, as well as loving the products and the whole ethos of the brand, once I heard this story I knew I had to be a part of it.
Such an inspirational lady!!!

👩🏻Susie Ma was an only child, born in China 🇨🇳 in 1988 and brought up in Shanghai. They had no electric, no gas and no heating. They only had a hole in the ground for the toilet and a tin bowl to bathe in.

At a very young age, Susie and her parents moved to tropical North Queensland in Australia where she was surrounded by amazing plants and botanical actives that inspired her formulations today! 🌴🍃🌿🌱

Susie had a hard time in Australia as she didn't speak a word of English and was constantly bullied at school. At 13 years old, things weren't great at home for Susie and her Mum 😢 Her Mum made the brave decision to move them both to the UK, using money from the sale of the family car to buy one way tickets to Heathrow ✈️ 🇬🇧 Her mum still didn't speak a word of English so Susie had to grow up very fast and had to help her mum do everything from finding somewhere to live to enrolling herself into school.

They were living in a very small bedsit and Susie's mum was working 7 days a week to keep a roof over their heads & food in their mouths. When Susie was 15 she wanted to help her mum with the bills and she had an idea to make what is now Tropic’s founding product - the gorgeous Body Smooth Refreshing Polish!

She made 50 Body Polishes in her Mum’s kitchen using only 100% natural ingredients and put them into jam jars which was the cheapest packaging she could find. Off she went to Greenwich Market and set up a stall all by herself with 2 bowls, some water bottles and paper towels she had taken from school. She sold ALL 49 jam jars (1 was her tester pot) for £20 each and took £980 on her first day!! She was the happiest 15 year old on earth! 💷💷

After just 6 months she managed to save up £50,000 which she gave to her Mum as a deposit on a house. She then went on to pay off the mortgage too. Susie never spent anything on herself, it all went straight to her Mum. Her bond with her Mum is so strong and Susie still says to this day that everything she does is for her Mum 😍👩🏻💕

Over the next few years, Susie devoted nights and weekends to manufacturing, selling on the market stall and online and studying 'Cosmetic Formulating' at College. Then in 2010, she applied for The Apprentice with Lord Alan Sugar. Out of 73,000 applicants she made it on to TV and got all the way down to the last 3 in the finals but sadly she didn't win.

BUT, it was at this point that she was given the opportunity to present her passion and vision for affordable, natural and cruelty-free skincare products. Lord Sugar 👴🏻 was so impressed by the products and spotted a unique business opportunity within a rapidly growing natural beauty industry! He invested a quarter of a million pounds to become a 50/50 partner, making Tropic the only company he has ever invested in outside of The Apprentice winners!

Lord Alan Sugar said 'I admire the quality and the ethos of Tropic products and that's why I invested'. In 2013 Lord Alan Sugar believed this business should be with a personal touch, where reputation and the success of Tropic should be gained through word of mouth and to have strong values.

With Lord Sugar’s investment, Susie worked on developing a whole skincare range with 7 products. A year later she developed a brand new cosmetic range that's powered by active botanical extracts, 100% naturally derived, free from all harsh chemicals, vegan and cruelty free 💚🍃🌱🌿🐰

On 4th May 2013 they opened their doors to 400 beauty lovers nationwide to launch their very own businesses with Tropic. In less than 6 months these 400 ambassadors more than doubled to 1,000 ambassadors and to date there are over 10,000 Ambassadors (as of June 2018).

👴🏻Lord Sugar told Susie that she wouldn't turn over £1 MILLION in sales in her first year as she had predicted however exactly one year later Susie's Tropic Business has turned over £2.2 MILLION! 🙌 😲
