A Final Farewell – 1974-2025

In 1974, Betty Arundel, alongside her son Graeme, opened the doors to what would become far more than just a hair salon. It was built on hard work, loyalty, laughter and genuine care for every single person who walked through the door. Over the decades, it became part of the fabric of our community, and a staple of the Winyates Centre in Redditch. Just a few years later, Michael Arundel joined his mother and brother, working alongside them and becoming an integral part of the salon’s story in Redditch.

After we sadly lost Betty in 2007, and then Graeme in 2014, Michael took on the responsibility of running the salon.

From 1974 to 2025, we have had the privilege of welcoming generations of clients, families and team members through our doors. Many of those who worked alongside us were never simply colleagues. They became lifelong friends, extended family, and in many cases went on to open salons of their own and build wonderful careers.

Within those four walls we shared milestones, weddings, new babies, challenges, laughter, tears and countless cups of tea and ci******es. The friendships formed and the bonds created over five decades are something we will always treasure, and they will forever mean more to us than words can truly express. something Betty, Graeme and Michael have always been incredibly proud of.

Although the salon hasn’t closed in the way any of us would have wished, and certain circumstances were beyond our control, we genuinely believe that this decision, though incredibly difficult, is the right one for everyone involved. Due to ongoing illness, this message has taken some time to share, and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we found the right words.

Like so many small businesses, the COVID years brought challenges we had never experienced before. Long closures, restrictions, reduced capacity, increased safety costs and ongoing uncertainty had a lasting impact. These factors placed significant financial pressure on the salon, from loss of income during enforced shutdowns to the increased day-to-day running costs that followed. While we worked tirelessly to rebuild and support our team and clients through that period, the business never quite returned to its previous strength.

More recently, Michael has faced significant health challenges. He has not been in the salon since the summer of 2024 and experienced a short hospital stay at the start of 2025 due to a long-term illness. After dedicating the majority of his working life to the salon, stepping away was never an easy decision. He is now at home receiving daily care and focusing on his health and wellbeing... although it has been quite an adjustment for someone who has spent a lifetime surrounded by people, conversation and the occasional well-timed dad joke.

Alongside this, continued increases in operating costs : including rising energy prices, supplier charges, insurance premiums and wider government cost pressures on small businesses, placed further financial strain on the salon. Recent additional employment and operational cost increases introduced at a national level only added to those challenges.

Despite Michael’s determination and best efforts to steady and sustain the business, the day-to-day pressures became increasingly difficult to manage. With his health preventing a full return and the ongoing financial demands continuing to rise, it was no longer possible to operate the salon in the way it deserved.

To every member of staff who has been part of this journey since 1974, thank you. Your talent, loyalty, personality and dedication shaped the salon into what it was. We sincerely wish each and every one of you the very best in your future careers and lives. You will always be part of our story.

To our clients, some of whom have been with us for decades, thank you for your loyalty, your stories, and for trusting us through so many chapters of your lives. We also hold in our thoughts those clients who are no longer with us; it was a privilege to have known you and to have played even a small part in your lives over the years.

A personal message from Michael:

“I am incredibly proud of what our family built and what we continued together for over 50 years. The salon was never just a business to me, it was family, community and heart.

I am deeply grateful to every member of staff, past and present, for your hard work, loyalty and dedication over the years. You helped shape the salon into what it became, and I will always be thankful for the part you played in our journey. I know each of you will go on to have successful and fulfilling careers, and I sincerely wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous future.

To our clients, thank you for your trust, your support and the many conversations we shared over the years.

While I am now focusing on my health, I carry with me nothing but gratitude for the years we spent together. Thank you for being such an important part of my life”
