You must try not to burn if you are wanting a spray tan. Your skin takes weeks to heal and multiple regenerating of layer peeling before 100% healed to expect perfect coverage from a spray. After so many years of tanning I can say this with 100% certainty.
Plenty of lotions and potions at different strengths for your choice and you will still brown up without burning. Take it easy!!
