👀 Let me guess… is that a splinter again?

Well… yes, it was. 😄

This lovely gentleman first came to see me last year with a very painful splinter that had already become infected. We removed it, cleaned the area thoroughly and within a month it had healed beautifully, you couldn’t even tell it had ever been there.

Fast forward a year and he’s now one of my regular patients, coming in for his routine foot care appointment.

As always, I was checking both feet, not just focusing on the treatment he’d come in for and there it was… another splinter! He hadn’t even realised it was there, although it had just started to become uncomfortable.

One thing I always tell my patients is that I don’t just focus on the reason they’ve booked the appointment. Every visit includes a thorough assessment of their feet because it’s often the little things you haven’t noticed yet that can turn into bigger problems if they’re left untreated.

Looking after your feet isn’t just about treating what’s causing pain today - it’s also about preventing problems before they become painful.

I suppose now we’ll just have to wait and see what turns up at his next appointment! 😉🦶

Let’s talk about Retronychia 👣

Not every thickened, yellow nail is a fungal infection.

This patient came to see me after being told the nail was likely a fungal infection. However after a thorough assessment it became clear that this wasn’t a fungal nail at all. It was retronychia.

Retronychia is usually caused by repeated trauma, most commonly from tight fitting footwear.

After the injury the nail stops growing forwards and becomes trapped beneath the skin at the base of the nail. As a new nail starts growing underneath it pushes the old nail backwards and upwards. This can lead to pain, inflammation and sometimes infection with drainage of pus.

The trapped part of the nail was carefully removed to allow healthy nail growth to begin again. Nail regrowth takes time but I’ll be sharing the progress over the coming months.

I know many people feel embarrassed about their feet. Feet are personal, we don’t show them to people every day like we do our hands. I completely understand that.

✔️ I use sterile instruments, including a scalpel when appropriate to safely reduce hard skin and remove painful corns.
✔️ Every appointment begins with a thorough consultation, including your medical history and any medications you take to ensure treatment is safe and appropriate for you.
✔️ I take a holistic approach to your foot health. Rather than simply treating what I see, I take the time to understand your concerns, assess your feet and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.

Painful corns, hard skin and recurring foot discomfort can have many different causes. Footwear, prolonged standing, pressure, foot mechanics and certain medical conditions can all play a part. That’s why every treatment is tailored to the individual, there is no one size fits all approach.

A medical pedicure is very different from a beauty pedicure. It isn’t about nail polish or appearance, it’s about reducing pain, improving comfort and supporting the long term health of your feet.

My priority is to help you feel comfortable, relieve pain and support your foot health. I believe good foot care starts with listening. Summer ☀️ is here … but not everyone feels comfortable showing their feet.

Over the years in my clinic I’ve met so many people who hide their feet because of a damaged, missing, thickened or traumatised toenail.

In fact, this is much more common than most people realise.

Many people spend years avoiding sandals, beach holidays, swimming pools or even walking barefoot around family and friends. Not because of pain but because they feel embarrassed.

What makes me sad is that so many people don’t know help is available.

Let’s talk about painful calluses 👣

Where do painful calluses come from?

A callus develops when the skin is exposed to repeated pressure or friction. It is the body’s natural protective response, but when that pressure continues over time, the skin becomes thicker, harder and, in many cases, painful.

Painful calluses are not caused by just one factor. They can develop due to:

✔️ Excessive pressure on certain areas of the foot
✔️ Biomechanical imbalances
✔️ Changes in gait and walking patterns
✔️ Foot deformities such as bunions or hammer toes
✔️ Poorly fitting footwear
✔️ Long hours spent standing, walking or working on your feet

Although a callus may look like “just hard skin”, it can cause significant discomfort and even affect the way you walk. Patients often describe the feeling as walking on a stone, a burning sensation, or tenderness with every step.

One of the most satisfying parts of treatment is seeing the immediate relief patients experience after professional callus reduction. In many cases, walking feels more comfortable straight away.

However, effective treatment is not only about removing the hard skin. Understanding why the callus has formed is equally important. If the source of pressure remains, the callus is likely to return.

As a Foot Health Practitioner, I take a holistic approach to foot health, looking beyond the surface of the skin. I assess factors such as pressure distribution, foot function, biomechanics, footwear and overall foot health to help identify possible contributing causes.

Let’s talk about toenail reconstruction 👣

An effective solution for damaged, deformed, or partially missing toenails.

Toenail reconstruction is a non-invasive procedure used to improve the appearance of a damaged or missing nail. It can be beneficial following trauma, surgery, or conditions that affect the natural growth and shape of the toenail.

Using a specialist reconstruction product, a prosthetic nail is carefully created to mimic the appearance of a natural nail. The result is a realistic-looking nail that can help protect sensitive areas and improve comfort in footwear.

A reconstructed nail is not a permanent replacement. As the natural nail grows, regular maintenance may be required to maintain its appearance and function.

Every nail is unique, which is why treatment is tailored to the individual condition of the nail and surrounding skin.

What looked like a simple nail problem turned out to be much more than just onycholysis.

The patient came in believing the nail was simply lifting away from the nail bed.
However pain, throbbing and pressure sensitivity raised concern during assessment.

After careful cleaning a collection of pus and inflammation was discovered beneath the nail plate.

Cases like this are often linked to:
• prolonged pressure from safety boots
• tight footwear
• long nails
• repetitive microtrauma

This is why proper assessment matters.

Not every nail change is cosmetic and not every condition is as harmless as it first appears.
