The 5 stages of pain!

Pain Science is a rabbit hole I’ve been diving into a lot recently, and it is truly mind blowing.

The above is my own interpretation of the knowledge we now have around pain, based on a character we all know and love.

This is literally why things hurt, and its incredible to think that our past experiences, pre-expectations and unhelpful beliefs about pain, (as well as many other factors) will have such a massive influence on the pain we feel.

Why did I ask how Lisa Simpson would react? Because she’s a completely different character. She’s smarter, perceives the world differently and has had different experiences.

This conversation will lead us into discussions about chronic pain, and why people tend to stay in pain for so long after the injury has occurred (and the tissue itself probably will have healed.)

I was asked yesterday what pain meant to me, and this is what came out. What do I mean by this?

I mean that no clinician should ever assume they fully know the kind of pain their client/patient is experiencing, as pain varies from person to person. This is why it is essential to treat the PERSON, as opposed to the SYMPTOM.

Pain is hugely multifactorial, and is something we explore together when you come to see me, if it is help with pain you require.

🔥Some work today for another dedicated bodybuilder 🔥

We went through some poses pre treatment to figure out what needed the most attention. Plus we looked into reasons why some gym movements felt better than others on different sides. Turned out there was less engagement in the right trap, causing a bit less power in the push movements. So we discussed ways in which this can be improved as well as some soft tissue work.
