Itâs research like this that makes me very excited for the future of massage and associated modalities
đ§ Scientists have discovered a remarkable way to double the brainâs waste clearance systemânot with drugs or surgery, but simply by massaging the skin.
A team from the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) has shown in mice that gently stimulating the lymphatic vessels under the skin of the face and neck can dramatically boost cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. This process helps flush out toxins and waste products from the brain, including harmful proteins linked to Alzheimerâs disease. Using a specially designed mechanical stimulator, researchers restored CSF drainage to youthful levels in aged mice, suggesting a safe, non-invasive strategy to improve brain health.
Even more exciting, the study mapped previously unknown drainage routes from the brain to superficial lymph nodes through facial lymphaticsâpathways that remain active even in older animals. This discovery completes the anatomical picture of CSF outflow and hints at future wearable or clinical devices designed to enhance brain cleansing.
While more research is needed before human applications, this gentle mechanical approach may open the door to new therapies aimed at preventing or slowing neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimerâs and Parkinsonâs.

Great article here around bone health for women đŞ
Feel it in your bones: taking the pain out of osteoporosis More than half the women in the UK over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture. But can more awareness â and some heavy lifting â help us beat many of the effects of osteoporosis?

Exciting research into MS and potential solutions đ
In a groundbreaking study, scientists have pinpointed two specific gut bacteria that may play a direct role in triggering multiple sclerosis (MS) â a finding that could pave the way for new treatments or even prevention strategies.
đĽ Researchers at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich studied 81 identical twin pairs â where one twin had MS and the other did not â and uncovered striking differences in their gut microbiomes.
đ¨ The suspects?
Eisenbergiella tayi and Lachnoclostridium â bacteria found in much higher levels in the twins with MS. When introduced into mice, these microbes caused MS-like symptoms.
đĄ Itâs the most compelling evidence yet connecting gut health to MS. By manipulating the microbiome, we may be able to halt or slow the progression of this autoimmune disease.
The gut-brain axis just became even more critical to understanding neurological health.
