France has taken a major step toward greener cities by making it mandatory for all new roofs on commercial buildings to be partially covered with either plants or solar panels. This progressive policy aims to tackle multiple urban challenges at once, from reducing heat islands to generating clean, renewable energy.

Green roofs, covered with plants, act as natural insulators, keeping buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter. They absorb rainwater, reduce runoff, and support biodiversity by providing habitat for insects and birds in dense urban environments. On the other hand, solar panel-covered roofs contribute to France’s renewable energy goals by harnessing sunlight to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and helps commercial buildings lower their energy costs in the long run.
