VERRUCAS: DON’T IGNORE THE SIGNS 👣

A verruca is a small skin growth caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They most commonly develop on the soles of the feet and can easily be picked up in warm, damp environments such as swimming pools, communal showers, changing rooms and gym floors.

Many people mistake a verruca for a corn or callus, but there are a few key differences. Verrucas often have tiny black dots (these are small blood vessels), can interrupt the natural skin lines, and may be painful when you walk or when pressure is applied from the sides.

Although some verrucas disappear on their own, others can become painful, spread to other areas of the foot, or even be passed on to other people. The sooner they’re assessed, the easier they can often be managed.

Help reduce your risk by:

✔️ Wearing flip-flops in communal showers and around swimming pools.
✔️ Avoiding picking or scratching a verruca.
✔️ Keeping your feet clean and dry.
✔️ Not sharing towels, socks or footwear.
✔️ Covering a verruca when using communal facilities.

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a common fungal infection that usually starts between the toes, but it can also affect the soles and sides of the feet. It thrives in warm, damp environments, making sweaty shoes, changing rooms, gyms, and swimming pools the perfect place for it to spread.

Signs to look out for include:
👣 Itching or burning
👣 Red, inflamed skin
👣 Dry, flaky or peeling skin
👣 Cracked skin between the toes
👣 An unpleasant odour in some cases

The good news? There are simple steps you can take to reduce your risk:
✔️ Wash and dry your feet thoroughly every day, especially between the toes.
✔️ Change your socks daily (or more often if your feet sweat).
✔️ Wear breathable footwear and rotate your shoes so they can dry out properly.
✔️ Wear flip-flops in communal showers, changing rooms and around swimming pools.
✔️ Avoid sharing towels, socks or footwear.
