Have you ever experienced pain or tightness in low back, but when you try to touch the spot, it seems like you can't quite get to it? Like it's too deep? This is often caused by restrictions at the FRONT of the muscle. The quadratus lumborum is the most common example of this. It can get adhered in the front to the hip flexor and/or diaphragm, but the restriction is usually perceived to be in the back. Then people wonder why they stretch, massage, and otherwise work the area until they're blue in the face and get nowhere with it. It ART, we work through the belly to get to these areas.

Trying to treat a stubborn case of claw toes? Consider looking at the tarsal tunnel. Claw toes can happen when you get the weakness of the short toe flexors and strength or over-activity of the long toe flexors. When the tibial nerve gets compressed or entrapped at the tarsal tunnel, this can impair the flexor digitorum brevis (among others). The FDB is innervated by the medial plantar nerve; a branch of the tibial nerve. In contrast, the flexor digitorum longus (longer, more distally-attached toe flexor) remains strong. It remains strong because, while it too is innervated by the tibial nerve, it gets its innveration proximal to the tarsal tunnel, so is unaffected by entrapments there.

Clients frequently ask me for mattress recommendations. I generally advise people to err on the side of a mattress that's too firm. It's easy to make a firm mattress softer. There's not as much you can do to make a soft, unsupportive mattress firmer. I suggest getting a firm mattress, then experimenting with mattress toppers until you find the perfect fit. What's the best mattress you've ever slept on?

It's a fairly recent discovery that fascia in the body can contract and relax. It works a bit differently than muscle, though. We don't have voluntary control over it. It's governed by the autonomic nervous system. As such, stress can result in increased fascial tension.
