Lord Sugar cashes in with sale of stake in
Tropic Skincare

Lord Sugar has crystallised a multimillion-pound profit from one of his investments on The Apprentice television show after agreeing to sell his 50 per cent stake in Tropic Skincare.
Sugar, 76, acquired the stake after giving Susie Ma, the skincare brand’s founder, £200,000 in 2011 to help to build her company. Ma, 34, finished third on the 2011 series of his BBC One business show.
The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but it is thought to be Sugar’s most successful investment to emerge from the programme. Tropic had sales of £90.6 million in 2021 and pre-tax profits of £10.5 million. No dividend was paid in 2021, but Ma and Sugar shared a £10 million dividend in 2020 and a £2 million payment in 2019.
Ma was said to be financing the buyout from Sugar’s Amshold holding company via Tropic’s future trading profits, “with an agreed payback plan over the next few years”.
The entrepreneur, who started out selling body scrubs at Greenwich Market in London, said she would “always be so grateful for the investment. After founding the company at just 15 and spending every day since building it into the success you see today, reclaiming full ownership has always been my ambition.”
Sugar said: “When I first met Susie in 2010, I saw a unique grit and determination and it’s a drive she has maintained over the years. The business she has built and led since my investment has been nothing short of remarkable. It’s now the right time to part ways and allow Susie the space to take the company to new heights.”
Ma plans to launch a new website and branding and to expand Tropic’s product range, but is also managing the impact of higher operating costs.

“The cost of raw ingredients has risen sharply again and they’re forecast to inflate further before they come down,” she said. “But having successfully navigated similar obstacles during the pandemic, we’re really confident that we’ll continue to thrive.”
