Citronella Wax Melts & Candles

I’ve seen quite a few posts lately about citronella wax melts and candles being marketed as a way to keep flies and bugs away, so I just wanted to clear something up.

A lot of makers use citronella fragrance oil, not citronella essential oil.

Fragrance oils are mainly made to smell nice. They’re synthetic blends and often contain little to no natural essential oil, so they won’t work in the same way as true citronella essential oil.

Citronella essential oil is the natural ingredient people usually associate with helping to deter insects, but using essential oils in wax melts and candles is actually quite tricky. They don’t always perform well in wax, and the scent throw and longevity can be disappointing compared to fragrance oils.

So if you’re buying citronella wax melts or candles purely to keep bugs away, it’s worth checking whether they’re made with citronella essential oil or just citronella fragrance oil.

Personally, if I want to help keep bugs away, I find the simplest option is adding a few drops of citronella essential oil to a spray bottle with distilled water and spraying around entrance doors and my conservatory area. It works well for me and is much more straightforward.

Just a little heads up, because not all citronella products are doing the same job.
