A lovely client came to me feeling unhappy with her lips after a previous treatment done elsewhere. After examining her lips, I noticed the filler had been placed in the wrong layer of tissue, causing migration, also filler clumped in some areas creating visible asymmetry.

In this case, the best approach was to dissolve the old filler first before starting fresh.

1. How long do lip fillers last?

Lip fillers last around 12 months, the dissolving process depends on factors like metabolism, lifestyle, and the type of filler used. Regular top-ups can help maintain the desired look.

2. Will my lips look natural or overfilled?

The result depends on your preference and the amount of filler used. A skilled injector will ensure a natural, balanced enhancement that complements your facial features. You can always start with a subtle amount and build up over time.

3. Do lip fillers hurt?

Discomfort is minimal. A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure, and most fillers contain lidocaine to reduce pain. You may feel discomfort, but the treatment is generally well-tolerated.
Also, it is not recommended to get fillers done while you are on your periods as it can impact your pain level and the procedure might be more painful.

4. Is there downtime after the procedure?

There’s minimal downtime, but swelling, bruising, or tenderness can occur for a few days. It’s best to avoid alcohol, exercise, medications and caffeine for 24 hours after treatment to minimise swelling. Full healing process takes 2 weeks.

5. Can I dissolve my lip fillers if I don’t like them?

Yes! If you’re unhappy with the results, hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which quickly breaks down the filler and restores your natural lip shape. The patch test for this treatment is essential to ensure you are not allergic to the product.
