Welcome to lesson one; Skin Function.

We may all want to achieve beautiful, glowing skin but did you know the skin performs many vital functions?

Protection- Our skin acts as a barrier to protect our vital organs and to keep external aggressors out.

Sensation- Each cm2 of skin contains approximately 55cm of nerves and nerve endings which react to heat, cold and sensation.

Heat Regulation- There are 70cm of blood vessels per cm2 of skin which help maintain our bodies precise temperature.

Storage and synthesis- The skin is where we make vitamin D as well as storing water and lipids.

Absorption- Not only are your skincare products absorbed via the skin but also medicines such as ointments, hormone patches and small amounts of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Excretion- There are approximately 100 sweat glands per cm2 of skin which help to regulate the bodies temperature but also excrete waste substances from the body.
