11-year-old Jude has been a long-term patient of PHU. Starting his life on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Jude has practically spent his whole life in hospital.

He has suffered from intestinal failure causing him to have a lot of health complications over the years. He has spent many years of his life as an inpatient on starfish ward and sadly has been home for him for prolonged periods, suffering countless life-threatening episodes of sepsis.

Jude was listed for a multivisceral transplant in 2016 and waited 865 days for his donor. On 2 June 2018, he received a stomach, liver, pancreas, small and large bowel from a young child who sadly no longer needed them.

Jude was also able to help another child, so he gifted his liver to another little boy also needing a lifesaving transplant.

After his transplant Jude was able to have many firsts in his life…

First meal
First day without a backpack containing intravenous nutrition
First day playing football
First time to a friend's house

The firsts go on!

Jude has had time out of hospital and been more of a stranger in the last two years due to the selfless donor's parents.

One thing Jude can now do thanks to his life transforming transplant is attend school where he recently entered a poetry competition, which he has kindly shared with us:

I play football now but once I couldn’t.
Your liver, your kidneys, your eyes, and your heart,
Are no good when buried, so give someone a good start.
