After 45 years in hairdressing — 36 of them at Gordon Bassetts — I’m retiring.
It’s a strange mix of feelings: relief, pride, a little sadness, and a lot of gratitude. Hairdressing has been more than a job; it’s been a life full of stories, laughter, tiny rituals, and meaningful connections. I’ve cut, coloured, styled, and cared for thousands of heads and, through them, shared birthdays, weddings, hard times, and everyday moments that mattered.
Starting out, every snip felt like a small victory. Over the years, techniques changed, trends shifted, and salon chairs evolved, but the heart of the work remained the same: listening, creating, and helping people feel their best. At Gordon Bassetts I found not just a workplace but a community — colleagues who became friends, clients who became like family, and a steady rhythm that marked so many chapters of life.
I’ll remember the joy in a client’s eyes after a fresh cut, the relief of a new colour that finally felt right, and the trust people placed in me. Those moments made the long years meaningful.
To everyone at Gordon Bassetts — past and present — especially (Gordon and Lorraine )and to all my clients over the years: thank you. Your trust, stories, and support have made those years unforgettable.

We had the absolute pleasure of helping this lovely client take the plunge with a major haircut — over 13 inches (94g!) of hair donated to the Little Princess Trust 💕

Not only that, but she’s also raised over £400 to support this amazing charity, which provides real hair wigs to children and young people who’ve lost their hair through cancer treatment and other conditions.
