“Strictly Roots Natural Hair Care Studio” was founded by Ruth Smith in October 2002 and it was first salon of its kind in Canada. The Hair Care Studio was conceptualized with the intention of promoting natural hair care and encouraging and supporting women on the journey of growing and loving their own natural hair. After many years in the hair care industry and being personally caught up in the viscous cycle of “grow-relax-break” with her own hair, she chose to move away from the harsh chemical treatments and explore her own natural hair. She quickly realized there was little knowledge in the salon arena, and she herself had little knowledge about caring for natural Afro-hair. The search for products that worked well with natural Afro hair lead to another realization: There were no products on the market that was created for or catered to natural Afro hair. She started to experiment with Shea Butter and added oils that her grandmother used when she was a child in a desperate attempt to find something that worked not only on her hear, but to meet the growing demands of her customers. The studio became an excellent testing ground, and the products were developed from the inspiration, feedback and opinions of its customers. In 2010, Strictly Roots moved its head office to Accra, Ghana with the expressed purpose of studying the Shea Butter industry and continued development of the product line from organic, fair and ethically traded Shea Butter. Organic Shea butter is the base of the Strictly Roots product line and its production plays a unique economic role both in Ghana and Uganda. The Shea Butter industry and all its activities is reserved for women, allowing them to generate an income over which they exercise complete control. Strictly Roots Intl. believes strongly in Women’s Empowerment and in doing so we only use Shea Butter that is “hand made” by women using the centuries old method of production. The Shea Butter used in the product line is put through a rigorous cleaning process and the end result is an extremely effective, high quality Organic Shea Butter. Strictly Roots products are blended in Portland Oregon” an area of the USA known for its appreciation of, and knowledge about quality natural and organic products. This ensures an effective product and continued support for the women in the Shea Butter industry.
