Integrated solid waste management (ISWM) seeks to promote a unified approach to solid waste management, which will enable local or nation authorities to reduce the overall amount of waste generated and to recover valuable materials for recycling and for the generation of energy. By definition, integrated solid waste management refer to the strategic approach to sustainable management of solid waste taking into consideration waste segregation/sorting, transfer, treatment, recovery and disposal in an integrated manner, with an emphasis on maximizing resource use efficiency it has been shown that with appropriate segregation and recycling system the significant quantity of waste can be diverted from landfills and converted into a resources. For waste management to be effective, an internationally accepted hierarchy with the aim of achieving optimal environmental outcomes is to be considered. Thus, the importance of these factors in ensuring our very existence on earth cannot be overemphasized. Yet, modern man has largely failed to appreciate the incontestable role the environment plays in ensuring his existence. The environment continues to suffer the strains of pollution and other destructive human activities despite the invaluable benefits derived from it. From the prehistoric times until now, man has exploited the environment in diverse ways for his personal comfort. The advancement of industrial revolution in the late nineteenth century and emergence of science and development of sophisticated technology drastically changed the friendly relationship between Man and his natural environment. The impact of modern technology on natural environment is highly complex and controversial. Highly advanced technologies and scientific techniques have led to indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources and the generation of wastes that threaten the life- giving capability of the environment. Prominent among the harmful wastes generated in modern times include radioactive and mining waste that cause irreversible damage to the environment. Over the last three decades, there has been increasing global concern over the public health impacts attributed to environmental pollution, in particular, the global burden of disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about a quarter of the diseases facing mankind today occur due to prolonged exposure to environmental pollution.
