Putting things in God’s Hand.
Colin S. Edghill Telford

“But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.” Psalm 31:14,15 (NIV)
The psalmist David cries out in agony out of his distress. He sought relief for the many instances of refuge. If he wasn’t sick, he was under attack by his enemies to being lied about, maligned, terrified, and in anguished. Talk about having your hope squashed. It is from the depth of all of this hopeless desperation He comes to the realization that there’s a source that he count on to be his recourse. What is your response when you are in the middle of despair? Do you put your times in God’s hands?
Many of us have had our ability to trust so eroded that we are weary trusting again - even God. Naysayers have been able to convince us that trusting God is trusting the “white man’s God.” But I’ve been around long enough to know that the “white man” is ill-equipped to conjure up the infinite being we know as the sovereign God of heaven and earth. His brain won’t and or couldn’t be stretched to that extent. By the way all the other color of men have also fallen short. David says: “I trust you, Lord.” What solicited this trust?
One would be surprised what solitude in the backside of the hills and treachery of the valleys can teach you. You see, these were the places where David either swam or sank tending his father’s flock. It was there he learned that neither a bear or lion was any match for Jehovah. It was in this school of hard knocks that he tested and proved God kept both His word and promises. It was in these quiet time he feasted on the word to the extent that it saturated his heart.
What better place to flesh out Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (NIV) But I submit hiding the word in his heart for David had a lot more to do than with just protecting the heart from the ravages of sin. He reminds me of Jehoshaphat the king who defeated the combine armies of Moab and Ammon because he knew that he could trust in God because he could put everything in God’s hands ( see 2 Chronicles 20). Most if not all of us already have pre-planned and pre-packaged response at the ready - for David it was childlike trust in the word of God. It should be all of ours as well.
