Twenty years. One decision. A lifetime of memories.
The last live concert I attended was in 2006, when Digicel brought Akon to Guyana. After my accident, I never attended another live show. My fear of large crowds, combined with inaccessible venues, kept me away for two decades.
This year, I made a different choice. I refused to let Reggae on the Beach pass me by, especially with Capleton and Alaine, two of my favorite artists, on stage. I told myself, "What the heck? I'm going!"
With the unwavering support of my brother and brother-in-law, who pulled my wheelchair through the sand, I made it. There I was, surrounded by music, energy, and joy, proving to myself that fear doesn't have to have the final say.
This wasn't just another event it was a personal victory. And I can confidently say that Reggae on the Beach has earned a permanent place on my calendar.
To my fellow persons with disabilities: Take a chance. Take a risk. Don't let fear overpower your mind. You are capable of achieving and experiencing far more than you may believe.
And to families: Please continue to support your loved ones with disabilities. Your encouragement, patience, and willingness to stand beside us can make all the difference. Sometimes, all we need is someone who believes in us until we're ready to believe in ourselves.
