The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the epidermis and serves as a crucial protective barrier for the body. It is composed of many components that work together to maintain skin integrity and prevent the entry of harmful substances. The primary constituents of the skin barrier include:

✅ Corneocytes - flattened, dead skin cells that make up the outermost layer of the skin. These cells are densely packed and surrounded by lipids, creating a protective barrier against external elements.
✅ Lipids - including ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol – they form a lipid bilayer between the corneocytes, preventing water loss and protecting the skin from environmental factors.
✅ Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF) - water-soluble compounds, such as amino acids, urea, and lactic acid, that help maintain skin hydration. They contribute to the skin's ability to attract and retain moisture, supporting a healthy barrier function. An acidic pH is essential for the hydrolipidic film.
✅ Proteins - Structural proteins, such as filaggrin and keratins, play a crucial role in maintaining the strength and integrity of the skin barrier.
✅ Enzymes – they regulate various processes, including desquamation (shedding of dead skin cells) and the breakdown of certain substances. These enzymes contribute to the overall balance and health of the skin barrier.
✅ Glycosphingolipids - lipids with sugar molecules attached. They contribute to the structure of the lipid bilayers in the skin barrier and play a role in cell signalling.
✅ Sebaceous glands – producing oils (sebum) that contribute to the lipid composition of the skin barrier. Sebum helps lubricate the skin and prevent excessive water loss.

It is so important to understand that the complex interplay of these components creates a healthy and resilient skin barrier.
